As a car enthusiast, you’ve probably had your fair share of lifting up your vehicle on jack stands as you repair or replace the components underneath your chassis. Just like the stands that allow you to keep working safely, a lift support can do the same thing for your trunk, hood, or door. Getting one means that you’ll be free from having a lid suddenly bang down on top of your head. However, this nifty little device will fail over time, since the gas pressure inside it can leak out. When this happens, you’ll need to find and install a replacement part so that you can customize your beloved vehicle once again. We recently had to change the lift support on our 1998 Ford Explorer’s hood and we decided to go with the Stabilus brand. Here’s what we found out about the experience:

Pros:
- The price that we found online was surprisingly reasonable. It fell within our budget and it was actually cheaper than what a retail store sells.
- When we got the product, we inspected it and found that it seemed to be of high quality, even at its affordable price. There doesn’t seem to be any holes or cracks where the gas could leak out.
- Even as we encountered a few glitches, the installation process only took a few minutes.
- These gas-charged lift supports work beautifully each time we open up our hood now. They are quite a solid OEM replacement.
- It doesn’t require any maintenance from us so we can focus our energies on other car parts instead.
Cons:
- The shipping could have been handled better. We feel as if it would have arrived faster by mail.
- We encountered a few installation problems. The first is that the instructions that came along with the product were quite confusing. It did not call for propping up the hood while doing the replacement, but we did so anyway to prevent a decapitation from happening.
- We also found that the product could only be installed at the side that’s the opposite of where we wanted to place it.
Verdict:
Prepare yourself for a bit of a struggle when you install Stabilus lift supports. However, it will be all worth it because that whole process only takes a few minutes. This product is budget-friendly while at the same time it’s also a good quality-made accessory that we’re glad to have.
