How to Maintain the Land Rover Discovery Radiator: 3 Things You Can Do

Maintenance of the Land Rover Discovery's radiator can take some time and elbow grease, but keeping it in top condition will help keep the engine from overheating. So if you want your SUV's engine to run well at all times, make sure the radiator is working properly as well. Below are some key Land Rover Discovery radiator maintenance tips you can follow:

  • Always check the coolant level.

Coolant is the lifeblood of your vehicle's cooling system. So, it is important that it always has the right amount of coolant. Although it runs inside a sealed circuit, the coolant can still escape through the radiator and radiator hoses, therefore decreasing its ability to cool the engine and increasing the risk of overheating. Once the coolant inside its reservoir starts to go low, refill it with the appropriate amount and mix as soon as possible. Make sure to refill through the coolant reservoir and not via the pressure valve on the radiator, as the latter can release very hot coolant and gas.

  • Check for leaks.

On the other hand, if you find yourself refilling the coolant reservoir often or if the engine keeps heating up rapidly even when idling, the cooling system may have sprung a leak. Start troubleshooting by looking for visible signs of leakage on the radiator and radiator hose, including cracks, cuts, and dried coolant deposits. You should also check at the ground beneath the engine bay for any puddles of coolant. If you find a source of leak, have it fixed or replaced as soon as possible.

  • Use the right type of coolant.

Ideally, the radiator should have a 50/50 mix of undiluted coolant and clean, mineral-free water. You should also add antifreeze solution in the mix during the winter months, although some of the coolants sold nowadays already come with antifreeze additives.

  • Flush the radiator.

Regardless of how many miles the vehicle has, the radiator should be flushed at least once every two years. Doing so will prevent buildup of rust particles and sediments inside the radiator, resulting in clogs, corrosion, and other problems with the cooling system.

The radiator is one of the components the Land Rover Discovery cannot do without. Once it's gone, the engine can literally burst into flame. So once the radiator begins to malfunction, it must be addressed immediately and, if the need arises, replaced with a new one. Replacing the Land Rover Discovery radiator can get quite messy and complicated, but once it's done properly, it can greatly improve your SUV's engine performance. To help you out, here are some tips to follow when replacing the radiator in your Land Rover:

Tip #1: Drain the coolant out.

The first step to replacing the radiator is to drain out the existing coolant inside it. Aside from leaving quite a mess, keeping the old coolant in the system can cause contaminants from the old radiator to transfer into the new one. Once the engine has completely cooled down, pull out the drain cock from the bottom of the radiator and let the coolant drain out from there. You can also drain the coolant out through the radiator hose. Make sure that the coolant drains into clean drain pan or a similar container and dispose it properly.

Tip #2: Check for and replace any worn radiator hose.

If you are replacing the radiator due to wear, it's likely that the radiator hose has worn out as well. Check the hoses for cracks, cuts, and other signs of damage on the surface. These can be potential sources of leaks, so if you find any, the radiator must be replaced. Check the hose clamps as well for any signs of rust and replace them if necessary.

Tip #3: Be careful when tinkering with the radiator fan.

To completely pry out the radiator from the engine bay, you will also need to detach the radiator fans. The blades of the fan are known to easily bend and break, so make sure that the fan does not make contact with the surrounding components during removal. If any of the blades do get bent, you can try straightening them out using a radiator comb tool.

Tip #4: Lift the front end of your vehicle.

Although this is not essential, raising the front of your Land Rover will help the air trapped inside the radiator and radiator hose in escaping through the radiator's pressure valve, which is the highest point of the engine where the coolant flows. Simply prop up the front end with a jack and jack stands and let the vehicle remain in that position while you work on the radiator.
