Diagnosing Difficulties in the Ford F-150 Heritage Hood

Hood's are built to last a very long time-they're the first line of protection to those valuable and expensive components under the hood, after all. That's especially true for a Ford F-150 Heritage hood, because a tough truck needs a tough hood. It might seem like an obvious thing, figuring out problems with the hood, but there are few things you truly have to look out for that could mean the difference between a great hood and a useless one. Take a look at these tips that break down the signs of a break down:

Improper or insecure closing

The first sign of possible problems with the hood is if it cannot seem to close properly and completely. True, the latch attached to the body of your truck might be to blame, but there is also a chance that the damage is in the arresting hook attached to your F-150 Heritage's hood or even warping of the hood itself. That latter bit is a much rarer occurrence as the Heritage's hood is large and heavy, and less prone to such damage. Still, it has and can happen so it's worth checking.

Odd surface discoloration

The least dangerous and not-too-obvious thing you can keep your eye on is the actual surface of the hood-especially as the truck starts to age. This discoloration is not simply a sign of topical damage. In fact, it usually signals a worsening state of the hood underneath-rusting, most likely. While not an immediate threat to safety, this discoloration also signals a weakening of the hood's surface which makes it prone to external physical damage.

Whine-y, stubborn hinges

Another thing to take note of is the condition of the hinges that secure the hood to the rest of your Heritage. If you notice that it squeaks and whines as you raise it-and if actually raising the hood seems to be a much more difficult task than it should be-you might want to check the hinges for rusting or even physical warping. This king of damage is very serious, and might cause the hood to eventually fall apart at the seams, as it were.

The Ford F-150 Heritage is truly a high-performance truck, and anyone who's anyone knows that the real key to extending the service life of any vehicle is to keep its components well cleaned and well maintained. Take the hood for example. Most people don't immediately realize the importance of the hood in protecting the most expensive components of your truck from the outside world. Even more people don't realize that it's cheaper to clean a hood than to have to replace it completely! To make sure that your hood is always in good shape, here are a few tips:

  • Keep the hood waxed.
  • Waxing not only keeps the hood looking shiny, but many modern waxes also make the hood more resistant to water and heat damage and in some cases, even scratches. Make sure that before you wax it, the surface of the hood is grit- and dirt-free and dry to prevent any scratching from occurring as you apply the coats of wax. Additionally, go for waxes that impart the aforementioned three benefits. These may cost a little more but are certainly worth it.
  • Don't forget to wash the underside of the hood.
  • Sure, everyone will always manage to clean the top side somehow-even if it is in passing, as the top is exposed anyway. But if you fail to wash the underside, your hood might wear out and break down anyway. Water and a light cleaning solution should do wonders for your hood, and it's sufficient to keep it clean and good to go for a long time. Just expect that it will require a bit more time to clean due to the dirt and deposits that get slapped onto it in the course of a day.
  • Visually inspect the hood often.
  • Make sure that you specifically check the hinges that allow the hood to pivot open. Ever realize how heavy your hood is? Well, those hinges have to bear the brunt of your hood's weight every time. Apart from that, it's important to check for rust-especially along the hood's edges and the recesses underneath. It pays to be vigilant-if you find damage in the hinges, it's a smarter and safer investment to replace the hood right away.
