Symptoms of a Bad Acura Integra Valve Lifter

When the engine is running, the camshaft rotates to apply lateral pressure on the valves in order to open and close them. This lateral pressure causes the valve to buckle. The job of the Acura Integra valve lifter is to prevent the valve from buckling by transferring the vertical load to the cylinder head. And although the valve lifter is made of sturdy steel alloys, it can still wear out over time, causing imprecise opening and closing of the valve. Aside from this, a faulty valve filter may also cause the rocker arm, valve tip, and push rod to go bad prematurely. That's why it is important to know the symptoms of a bad valve lifter. Here are the most common ones:

Clicking engine noises

The most common symptom of a bad valve lifter is a clicking or ticking noise. You will be able to hear it while you warm up your engine. This can be caused by a number of things, but the main culprit for this is a clogged head and camshaft, especially during times of freezing temperatures. Low temperatures break down the viscosity of the oil and make it lose its lubricating property. Because of this, the oil thickens and it finds difficulty in reaching the valve lifter, which is located at one of the highest points of the engine. Hence, the clicking sound is produced.

There are other causes for this symptom, namely, too much carbon deposit that causes abnormal stickiness, excessive leak down rate, leaky check valve seat, improper adjustment, or a piece of dirt stuck between the ball seat and the check valve ball.

Clacking engine noises

When you hear a harsh clacking sound during the whole time that you have your engine running regardless of the weather, your Acura Integra valve lifter may already be excessively worn. Other things you may notice with the clacking noise would be a rhythmic miss or stumble in the engine and white-gray or even black smoke coming out from the exhaust. When you see all these together, the lifter has collapsed and it can no longer open and close the valve.

The valve lifter is very crucial in the precise opening and closing of the valve, and it is what regulates the constant adjustment in the moving parts of the valve train. When this component fails to work properly, you will get into some serious issues, such as having the valves held open or close. Also, when it completely goes bad, it can get other engine components to wear out prematurely, causing further damage to the engine. So to avoid such issues, you need the following simple maintenance tips just to keep the Acura Integra valve lifter in great shape:

Adjust the valve lifter regularly.

The valve lifter works in conjunction with other engine components that are constantly in motion while the engine is running. Because of all the movement, the valve lifters need to be readjusted occasionally to maintain their precise opening and closing of the valves. Keep in mind that adjusting the valve lifters is not an easy DIY task, that's why it is recommended that only someone with some mechanical experience does this.

Start the job by taking off the valve covers and removing the spark plugs. Rotate the engine in the direction of normal operation until the number one exhaust valve rocker arm is open. Then, loosen the number one intake rocker arm adjustment lock nut using a socket wrench and turn the rocker arm adjuster screw until the rocker arm and the push rod are clear of each other. After this, tighten the rocker adjuster screw with a -inch of turn, then fasten it right there using a lock-nut. Make sure you don't miss any cylinder valve.

Clean valve lifters.

To prevent any clogging and other side effects brought about by such, you need to clean each Acura Integra valve lifter. To gain access to the valve lifters, you need to remove the valve cover, camshaft, and the rocker arm. Then remove the valve lifters out of the engine. Wipe off as much oil as you can by using a lint-free towel, then soak the parts in a jar of kerosene. Afterwards, inspect the parts for any deep scratches. And if you see any, it's time for you to replace them. If, however, there are no scratches or other damages, soak them in fresh motor oil. Once done, just reinstall everything back in the engine.
