Among the most common driving mistakes is failing to use the turn signal lights properly. If you fail to switch on your lights at least 100 feet before making a turn or five seconds before changing lanes, you may give other drivers the wrong signals. So they will not be able to prepare for your vehicle’s next move. This may lead to a side-swipe or a T-bone crash as you weave in and out of traffic.
If the reason behind your incorrect or delayed signals is a faulty turn signal light, don’t worry. You can easily avoid such untoward events on the road and get to your destination safely by replacing your defective Toyota signal lights.
When searching for a turn signal light replacements, you may encounter the terms OE, genuine, OEM, and aftermarket. Here’s a quick a guide to help you out:
OE, which stands for original equipment, refers to the parts of your car that came from its brand factory. Such genuine parts are sold with the manufacturer's label or branded packaging (e.g., Toyota turn signal light).
OEM, which means original equipment manufacturer, refers to parts made by accredited suppliers of the brand. Some parts used by Toyota and any other automotive marques are not always made internally but outsourced from other manufacturers or companies.
Aftermarket parts can be any replacement manufactured by companies other than the automotive brand itself and its accredited suppliers. They can take the place of the original part—be it for repair, customization, restoration, or performance.
With the growing DIY (do-it-yourself) and DIFM (do-it-for-me) market, car owners are given far wider choices than original or genuine parts, which are more expensive and harder to come by. OEM replacements and aftermarket parts are typically made to match the fit, function, and appearance of the original part.
When looking for a replacement Toyota turn signal light assembly, you also have to consider various factors to find the perfect swap for your defective turn signals. They include color, fit (whether it is a direct fit or a universal fit), series, assembly (whether it comes with or without bulbs), and location (especially if you are just replacing a specific side and not replacing the lights by pairs).
You may use the product code or number as a guide. Also, make sure that your chosen replacements pass the DOT and U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Some of the parts in the market today may even be CAPA-certified.
Car owners usually switch to LED lighting to customize their automotive lights or improve their performance or style. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of using LEDs:
The price of a replacement Toyota turn signal light ranges between $20 and $100. A turn signal light and headlight kit, on the other hand, may cost as low as $50 to as much as $300. The rate varies largely depending on the year, make, and model of the vehicle (e.g., 1999 Toyota Camry turn signal light assembly).
Cars don't talk, but they're able to communicate with each other through lights. These tell motorists which direction the vehicle is going: if it's about to switch to the left or right lane or turn around a corner. These prevent accidents on the road. So if your turn signal light suddenly won't flash, don't ignore it.
Change the light as soon as possible, so you can get back on the road and drive safely. You have to check the relay or flasher first, the switch, and other electrical connections. If it turned out that the light has burned out, then be ready to replace it. This can take you just a few minutes. Here's how you can install a new turn signal light:
Required skill level: Novice
Needed tools and materials:
Preparing for the job
Check the vehicle manual for the specs and to get an idea of how the turn signal light is installed. Replacing the turn signal light is the same for many vehicles, save for a few differences. That's why a vehicle manual will come in handy.
Getting access to the turn signal light
Access the turn signal light by removing the tail light/turn signal cover. Another way to do this is to get through the trunk. See how the tail light/turn signal light is sealed in place. You may have to unfasten the screws or bolts that hold the cover from the back of the light or twist the tab or knob on the cover.
You may have to unscrew or unbolt from the inside of the trunk (or the cargo compartment) or from the outside of the vehicle. As you remove the cover, you can now look into the bulb and light connections.
Removing the bulb
Gently grip the bulb. You have to wear gloves or use a rag to make sure that oil from your skin won't make contact with the glass, as this can shorten the bulb life. Push this in carefully and then twist it to the left or turn it counterclockwise. It can be removed easily with quick release. Just pull it forward.
As you remove the bulb, you have to disconnect the tail light/turn signal. You have to loosen the screws, bolts, or any hardware that keeps this in place. A screwdriver or a socket and ratchet may be used. Set these mounting hardware aside.
Cleaning
Inspect the bulb socket and the rest of the housing assembly. With a wire brush or paintbrush, remove dirt, dust, or rust buildup. Wipe the light assembly clean if needed.
Replacing the turn signal light
Set the new bulb into the socket. Make sure that everything is aligned and that the screws, bolts, or other installation hardware are put back in place and tightly sealed. You may have to reconnect the wiring. Test the bulb by turning on the turn signal before you secure it with the cover. Re-check the installation if the newly installed light doesn't work.
