Turn signals must be very visible to drivers in order to prevent any possible collision. A sequential turn signal light has a complicated wiring system that can actually malfunction over time; this does not sound good because making turns and changing lanes are drills that are often performed when driving. On the other hand, a standard simultaneous turn signal only requires one switch to be activated in order to light all of the four corner lights. This immediate availability of light signals for a turn or lane-change can be picked up by other drivers faster, thus making them act accordingly.
Rear red and front white turn signal lights were actually used prior to the 1960s, but in the succeeding years until today, amber turn signal lights have been the widely used type. Amber turn signal lights are said to be noticed better by drivers according to a 2008 study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In fact, the use of amber turn signals can actually lessen the chances of a collision incident by 28%. Moreover, turn signals with amber lenses and colorless bulbs are more visible in daylight than ones with colorless lenses and amber bulbs.
There is not much difference between a side-mirror-installed turn signal light and turn signals on the four corners of a vehicle. Each configuration is, in fact, depending on the model of the vehicle. Both configurations produce immediate light signals for turning and changing lanes in order to alert other drivers.
Most turn signal lights manufactured nowadays are made in two ways: one, the bulb is dipped in an amber coating for the bulb to produce amber light; two, a standard white-light-emitting bulb is used in conjunction with an amber lens. Each of the ways is acceptable, but the first method is a little problematic in a way that the amber coating on the bulb may flake off after prolonged heating and cooling. When this flaking happens, the bulb will then produce white light instead of amber, so the bulb needs to be replaced. On the whole, an amber lens that alters white light produced by a standard bulb is more preferable.
