Frizzy stuff like lint usually sticks to fabric, unlike vinyl. If you want to be sure, one thing you can do is pour a few drops of clean water on the soft top and rub this into the material. Let it settle for a while. If this seeps into the material, the soaked top is made of fabric. But if the water just formed a pool on the surface and just left a smudge, then you have a vinyl soft top.
To keep the color and texture of the vinyl top, use some protection. Vinyl protectant can help preserve these features. Choose a product that keeps away dirt and oil. You don’t want a top that’s made of vinyl to look greasy or to have too much gloss on it. Look for protectant that leaves behind a natural matte surface. Apply the vinyl top protectant from time to time. This can be done every month for added protection and for preventive maintenance.
Clean the top regularly, as often as you wash your car, so that dirt will be easier to remove. You can use car shampoo that doesn’t contain harsh chemicals or doesn’t offer gloss. When scrubbing away dirt, be very careful not to leave behind scratches. Use a brush with soft or feathered bristles. Another thing you can do before applying a special type of cleaner is to vacuum the top. This will help remove excess dirt and dust that gather around the seams. Before applying the cleaner, the top should be rinsed until it’s wet all over. This would make it easier to spray the cleaner and spread it evenly all over the top. Create a lather with a non-abrasive brush and scrub gently. It’s important that you remove the cleaner completely through thorough rinsing.
A soft top cleaner will be good for breaking up grease, film, and caked dirt. It will make it easier for you to remove these without leaving behind scratches and dings on the soft top. This cleaner will not only help prevent dirt from building but can also prevent mildew growth, as added protection. When looking for a soft top cleaner, choose products that are specially made for the material, whether it’s vinyl or fabric. Some cleaning solutions can be used on both; others are designed for cleaning vinyl. Some detergents, soaps, and shampoos may be abrasive to the soft top because of the chemicals.
Apply some protection that’s specially made for fabric, cloth, or canvas top. Before coating the top with protectant, make sure that it’s clean and dry. Gentle sweeping motions will ensure that you won’t overspray. Don’t spray too close to the surface to avoid saturation. Let it dry completely before adding another coat. This can be applied every month or every 6 to 8 weeks. Read the labels for best use according to the manufacturer.
Have the top cleaned using some mild dose of soap and some warm water. You may scrub this a bit using a fine, gentle brush. Rinse it well and let it dry completely before using a cleaner kit or applying some protectant. This normally does the trick.
Replacing the entire top is always an option. But if you don’t want to spend that much money or you’re looking for a temporary solution or quick fix, you may try sewing up the tear, applying some adhesive, or using a patch. Of course, you have to assess the cut or damage before moving on with any of these suggested options. Small tears and straight cuts are easier to fix. If the cut is jagged and longer than a foot, you may have to consider having the entire thing fixed by a professional or using a special kit that can best patch up the tear.
