The Dodge Ram 2500 is known for its good handling and suspension characteristics, and the components that could take credit for that is the shock absorber and strut assembly. A key part of your truck's suspension system, the strut and shock assembly dampens vibration from the road, ensures that all four tires remain in contact with the ground, and prevents the vehicle from leaning and swaying during turns. And once they wear out, these shocks and struts will be unable to perform these tasks effectively if not at all.
Maintenance of the shocks and struts in your Dodge Ram 2500 is essential to its smooth and safe operation. In this guide, we'll share some key maintenance tips for the Dodge Ram 2500 shock absorber and strut assembly:
There is no specific expiry date for shocks and struts as a wide variety of factors affect their service life, but there are several warning signs that could point out that your truck's shock and strut assembly will conk out very soon. Some of the key things to take note of include frequent pronounced bouncing, reduced handling and braking performance, tires losing grip on the road, uneven tire wear, rattling or strange noises, and visible signs of leaks or damage to the shocks and struts. Once you see any of these symptoms, bring your truck to a mechanic immediately.
If you'll be replacing the shocks, it is recommended to "bleed" them out first before mounting the shocks onto your truck's suspension. To do this, simply hold the shock absorber in an upright position, extend it, then turn it upside down and compress it. Repeat the entire process three or more times. Doing so will enable the oil to coat the entire piston rod and optimize the internal components of the shock, ensuring smooth operation.
Every time you drive your truck to the shop for an oil change, have the mechanic lubricate the ball joints and other parts in your shock and strut assembly. Do not attempt to lubricate components that appear to be sealed, however, as these are not meant to be serviced.
The strut and shock assembly in your Dodge Ram 2500 is a critical component to its handling and suspension performance, so when it breaks down it needs to be replaced immediately. Luckily, most if not all auto repair shops are capable of replacing the struts and shocks of Dodge Ram 2500 trucks, although if you have the necessary tools in your garage and some extra time, you can install these components yourself.
In this guide, we've compiled some helpful pointers you can follow when installing a Dodge Ram 2500 shock absorber and strut assembly:
Tip #1: Always replace in pairs.
Shock and strut manufacturers often recommend replacing these components in pairs, and while it may be easy to dismiss this as an obvious marketing ploy, replacing the entire strut and shock assembly even if only one shock or strut is damaged has its merits. This is because even a slightly used shock or strut component will have a different damping characteristic with a new one, and using both new and old shocks and struts alongside one another may lead to erratic wheel movement and handling problems.
Tip #2: Loosen the wheel bolts before lifting.
You'll be able to exert more force on the bolts and nuts with the wheels still on the ground, making it faster and easier for you to loosen them. First, loosen the bolts securing the wheel and lift the car up with the jack. Once your truck is raised, place a set of jack stands on the frame and remove the bolts and the wheel.
Tip #3: Make sure your truck is on the ground before tightening the stud nut.
With the vehicle in air, the wrench will not have any resistance to leverage against to push the stud through the mounting bushing, making it more difficult to tighten it and potentially damage the threads of the nut.
Tip #4: Compare washers.
Make sure to compare the supplied washers in the kit with the original ones in your truck. This is because some kits contain more hardware than needed and some original washers are meant to be re-used. If the washer or spacer has a different thickness than the ones in your vehicle, even in minute increments, may cause installation problems.
