Seat covers that are made of fabric don’t get hot or cold easily since they can withstand temperature changes. You also get a wide range of choices for the type of fabric used for the seat cover. There’s canvas, nylon, velour, polyester, denim, and corduroy. These provide a wide set of texture and look with various patterns and colors available. They may come in various patterns and graphic designs and may offer a plush appearance or a softer, comfortable feel. Compared to leather, the fabric type is not as expensive. Also, if you travel with pets, fabric seat covers may be a safer bet. Leather can get torn easily with pets around because of their claws.
The cheaper fabric car seat cover is not always as durable as leather. This may wear out much faster, depending on the quality of the fabric and its exposure to harsh sun rays. Fading may occur on fabric colors and the fibers may disintegrate after some time. They may develop holes, may get stained and wet easily, and may smell bad if spills and dirt are not cleaned properly. The fabric seat cover requires more frequent cleaning, while leather requires less maintenance.
Leather may be more expensive, but it sure comes with a good number of benefits, the chief among them being the rich look and nice feel you can get from this material. With leather, you can give your car interior a more expensive, luxurious custom look. The vehicle will have a higher resale value with leather car seat covers. Leather is also easier to clean; it won’t get stained easily. You won’t need to wash leather seat covers thoroughly or spot clean them too often. All you need is a good brush or wipes. Another great thing about leather covers is that they’re tougher than most fabric materials, and they don’t hold bad odors like fabric.
The problem with leather is that it can easily get hot. Some would even put blanks over the covers so they won’t get burned from the hot leather seat. The smooth ones also tend to get cold during winter and can be quite uncomfortable. Fabric seat covers may be a better option in this case.
Neoprene seat covers would be a great choice. They’re quite easy to clean. They don’t stain easily and don’t require much to clean spills. They can be wiped clean with a damp cloth or can be treated with wet suit shampoo for spills that are deep. The neoprene material is fixed to a nylon outer lining, which makes it quite easy to clean because the lining takes the spills.
If there are spills, these should be wiped off as soon as possible using a soft rag to absorb the liquid. Dust and crumbs should be brushed off and vacuumed. Don’t use abrasive brushes or rough paper towels to prevent scratches. You may use a special leather cleaner and/or conditioner. Leather conditioning can be done every month. Allow the solution to set in properly before using the seats. It will also help if you’ll minimize the exposure of the leather car seat cover to sunlight by parking in a shade such as a garage or sheltered parking space or by using a sun shade.
Do some regular cleaning using a vacuum to remove dirt, hairs, lint, and dust and keep them from settling deep into the fibers. Wipe off spills immediately and be sure to clean off mud or grease as needed. The covers may be machine-washed, though you have to check for specific cleaning instructions for a particular type of fabric. Be sure to use the right type of cleaner or a mild soap. Make sure that they’re dried well enough. A spray-on cleaner may be used to remove spots without taking off the covers and washing them. It also helps if you’ll limit sun exposure by using a sun shade, having your car’s glass tinted, or parking in a shaded area.
