Steps to Follow on Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Nerf Bars Maintenance
Just like any other accessory in your truck, the Chevrolet Silverado 3500 nerf bar requires a bit of maintenance every now and then. Because of their location in the vehicle, nerf bars are highly exposed to road debris and natural elements and will rapidly succumb to wear if not cleaned and maintained periodically. To help you out, here are some key maintenance steps to follow for the nerf bars in your Chevy Silverado.
- Lubricate the mounting points and metal-to-metal connections.
Rattling or thumping noises coming from the nerf bars are caused by one of the bar's metal parts rubbing another part or from loose hardware. To prevent this, tighten the loose hardware and coat a layer of lubricant around the mounting points and other parts of the bar where metal-to-metal contacts occur. This will help minimize friction and noise. You can use white lithium as lubricant, as it lasts longer compared to other types of grease. But if it is not available, then regular grease is just fine.
- Clean up rust spots on chrome bars with aluminum foil.
Although a rare occurrence, rust spots can still appear on chrome-plated nerf bars, especially if they are not cleaned often. Thankfully, cleaning up these spots can be as easy as rubbing them with aluminum foil. Simply ball up the aluminum foil, dip it in undiluted white vinegar or cola, and scrub the rusted areas. The aluminum and acid from the vinegar/cola will cause the rust particles to break down into smaller particles for easy cleanup.
- Make sure that the bolts are tightened according to the recommended torque.
As a rule of thumb, most mounting bolts for nerf bars are designed to be tightened at 65 foot-pounds; you can check with your nerf bar's manual to confirm this. Tightening the bolts beyond this recommended torque will result in damage to the threads, brackets, and even the step pads themselves. Because of this, it is recommended to tighten the bolts using a torque wrench, as using an impact wrench or a similar power tool makes it all too easy to over-tighten these bolts.
Nerf bars for the Chevy Silverado 3500 are often marketed as being easy enough for beginners to install, but problems can and do arise during the process. And if the bars are not properly installed, they may not be strong enough to handle your weight when stepped on and may pose a hazard. There are several problems you can encounter when installing a Chevrolet Silverado 3500 nerf bar, but these can often be fixed without the need for professional help. To that end, here are some troubleshooting tips you can use for the nerf bars on the Chevy Silverado:
The brackets aligned with the holes in the nerf bars.
If any of the brackets don't align with the nerf bars' mounting holes, it's more likely that the brackets are improperly mounted or you are installing the bar on the wrong side. Consult the manual included in the nerf bar kit and check if the bracket is mounted in the correct location and position. Readjust or reposition it if necessary. If the brackets are on the correct place, check if the step bars are on mounted on the right side.
The bolts do not fit into the holes.
The mounting holes underneath the truck are often capped with a plastic grommet for protection against rust and mud, so make sure that the grommet is removed before you slot in the bolts. Check the holes for signs of rust, as corrosion can also build up around the mounting hole and might hinder the bolts from slotting through properly. You can usually remove dried rust particles with a wire brush, but if they are particularly stubborn, you can treat them first with rust dissolver gel.
The step pads are not lining up with the doors of the truck.
If the step pads are not lining up properly with the truck doors, it's possible that each nerf bar is installed at the wrong side. Switching the bars with one another usually solves the problem, but if the bars are still misaligned, you have to check the brackets as they might not be mounted correctly.
