What causes mass air flow sensor damage on a Volkswagen Jetta?
The Jetta's MAF sensor can get damaged by road salt, dirt, sand, and dust, leading to incorrect sensor readings. This could be because the air filter is inefficient or the box holding it is broken or improperly sealed. Using cheap gasoline that has less detergent and cheaper additives, oil-covered air filters, and excessive oil spray from the crankshaft ventilator also affect the sensor.
What's the difference between a dirty mass air flow sensor and a damaged one?
Dirty MAF sensors on the Volkswagen Jetta can produce a decrease in gas mileage, power, or just experiencing a "less smooth" ride overall. To clean a MAF sensor, simply place it in a zip-lock bag and a pour a bottle of 70% isopropryl rubbing alcohol solution. Swish it around and leave it in for about 20 minutes and dry it with a towel for an hour. If the engine performance isn't restored after this, then the MAF sensor could be damaged. Another way to determine damage is to blow on the MAF sensor and use a voltmeter to see if the voltage fluctuates. If it doesn't fluctuate, then replace the sensor.
What's the difference between hot wire mass air flow sensors and the ones used by Volkswagen Jettas?
A hot wire mass air flow (MAF) sensor has a wire that's suspended in the engine's air stream. This wire is heated with an electrical current. When air flows past the wire, the wire cools and gets heated up again. The air flowrate is measured by the amount of current required to maintain the wire's temperature at an equilibrium. A higher amount of current means a greater air flow. Instead of this more conventional hot wire, a Volkswagen Jetta's MAF sensor uses a hot film to measure air flow by examining the temperature across the electronic membrane's upstream and downstream sides. This produces a frequency signal that's also directly proportional to the air flow inside a Jetta engine.
