Yes, whether it’s for the hood, trunk, or the hatch, lift support installation is something even a novice DIYer can accomplish with so much ease and in less than half an hour. Just make sure you have a buddy who’s willing to hold the hood/trunk/hatch up while you’re doing the replacement. It’s also advised that you start working on the top part of the lift support and then carry out the same procedure in removing the bottom part. It is a good idea to work on one lift support at a time. After you’ve installed the new support on one side, that’s the time you should start working on the other unit.
One way you can extend the service life of your gas strut is to keep the strut rod clean and free of filth and grease. The polished surface of the support also deserves periodic cleaning using a dry, soft cloth. To maintain its shiny look, you can apply a small amount of car wax after cleaning and then polish it off to achieve a smooth surface. Avoid using silicone or oil, as it will just make the surface of the lift support sticky, therefore attracting dust and grit. Also avoid using any kind of tape on the support. You must keep the support away from anything that may scratch its surface. An abrasive household cleaner is also not good for cleaning.
You must never improvise anything to prop up your hood or tailgate. Any component that’s not designed to hold these contraptions up might break down or slide, causing the liftgate to hit your head or back. If there’s no one to help hold the liftgate up, you’d better schedule your DIY replacement task some other time, when you have a buddy to help you out with the task.
The weather and outside temperature are actually among the common reasons lift supports wear out or lose their charge after a while. You see, gas-charged lift supports are packed with nitrogen gas and they are under 1500 lbs or more of pressure. During summer, when the vehicle’s interior temperature could reach 150 degrees or higher, the support’s gas charge becomes denser, plus the support is mostly in compressed position. The heat, as well as the strong pressure, will surely take their toll on the support, causing gas leak. As the gas leaks, the lift support will slowly lose its ability to lift the hood.
Breaking in is actually testing if the lift support can really be compressed by the hood or the tailgate. This is important since lift supports cannot be compressed by hand.
