Material : AcrylicIt depends on what kind of style you’re looking for and the purpose for using these accessories. The bug shield and car bra differ in terms of look and the way they work. The bug shield is set on top of the hood’s edge to repel bugs. With its design, the strip of plastic is able to create a jet of air or slip stream that deflects the bugs or sweeps them over. This shield doesn’t take up a lot of space and has less coverage compared to the car bra, which may be wrapped around the grille and the bumper or the hood’s edge. The car bra protects against rocks, kicked-up debris, and dirt that may ruin the paint of the front end. Those who live in places with a lot of bugs may have better use for a bug shield. Car bras are for those who want a sports car look, with their modern racy style, and those who want to protect the grille, bumper, and even a larger part of the hood.
Give your bug shield its much-needed washing first. All you need is soapy water. Remove dirt and dead bugs and hose them off. Don’t forget that gap in between the shield and the hood. For restoration, what you can use is some good plastic polish. Wipe this on the plastic shield using a soft, clean rag. After you let this sit for a while, you have to buff the shield. Apply more coats of polish as needed.
Others have tried spray-painting their old bug deflectors, and this worked for most. By spray-painting the bug shield, you can give it a new look, covering up the faded parts. You have to be careful, though, in choosing the right paint for the bug shield. See to it that the product is safe for the material, i.e., acrylic or plastic. Also take care not to paint over the lines. Make sure that the coat is even.
You can clean the spot where the old adhesive is still stuck with dish soap and water. Washing the hood will help lift off the adhesive and allow you to peel the residual glue easily. Don’t use any sharp object in peeling off the adhesive—this can leave behind scratches. Usually, this can be rubbed off from the surface with your fingers. Remember to let the area dry fully before sticking in a new bug shield.
Wash the hood to get rid of dirt. After the surface has dried, wipe some rubbing alcohol on the surface to remove traces of oil and dirt.
Plastic solvent cement can be used to seal in cracks or gaps. Another thing you can use is a plastic patch. Before fixing the cracks, first prep up the bug shield. Remove oil or grease by cleaning it with dish detergent. As you set the pieces together, use spring clamps. The spots must be marked with tape. A plastic patch will help cover up the gaps in the pieces. A small cut of the acrylic or plastic can be used as backing. This should be measured well. It shouldn’t be too big or small. You can then add a coat of solvent cement and allow this to dry fully. Check the instructions by the manufacturer on how to best use the solvent cement and follow these strictly.
Aerospace-grade acrylic is the best choice for a hard-wearing bug shield. This material is almost indestructible. It won’t develop cracks or break easily even when exposed to kicked-up debris and a swarm of bugs. And, it doesn’t get badly scratched as well.
