Material : AcrylicBug shields are among the automotive wind deflectors that can help improve the vehicle's aerodynamics, allowing you to drive with partially opened windows and sunroof. With such deflectors installed, the air won’t rush into the cabin but will get redirected to avoid drag. Another way you save fuel is that you can cruise without turning your car’s AC on, knowing that bugs and other insects have no chance of getting into the partially opened windows.
Yes, the bug shield can produce such noise due to redirected air. But if the crackling noise seems to come from the top part of the windshield when running at highway speeds, it’s more likely to be caused by a loose trim on the sides of the windshield. The noise is usually created at around 60 MPH or when you are driving against the wind.
When doing any exterior modification for your ride, it always pays to start by washing your vehicle. For this type of DIY installation project, you have to pay extra attention to the part along the front of the hood where the shield will be mounted. For those who don't have enough time to wash their entire vehicle, just make sure that the installation area is clean and dry. It is also advised that you pre-fit the bug shield first for you to know where to attach the mounting hardware. Doing so will help avoid improper bug shield installation and position.
You can excellently buff the shield with the help of a power drill. All you have to do is to attach the buffing pad to your power drill, turn on the drill and set it at its lowest setting, and then run the buffer over the bug shield surface in a circular motion. If you observe that the polish is kind of difficult to remove, increase the power setting of the drill until the dried polish has been eliminated. For extra layer of shine, you can apply another level of polish and re-buff afterwards.
The surface of the bug shield gets hurt by merely colliding with insects and bugs while driving. Fortunately, there are now products, like polish, that can remove hairline scratches from plastic components. Such polish gets rid of hairline scratches, which can cloud clear plastic when left ignored. These scratches, though small, can become unsightly once they get filled with debris and dirt. Bug shield polishes are more ideal for units made of plastic.
You can remove those bug marks using a cleaning solution that’s made of a few drops of liquid dish soap, 1/4 cup vinegar, 1 tbsp. ammonia, and warm water. Mix these ingredients in a 32-oz. spray bottle. Shake well and spray on the hard-to-remove bug marks. Let the solution sit on the bug marks for five minutes before rubbing it off with a clean rag. When the bug marks have been eliminated, rinse the bug shield and dry.
It’s advised to take the bug shield off the vehicle before painting it. One important tip during paint application: make sure the spray can is at least two feet away from your face all the time. Also, move the spray paint can back and forth over the bug shield and in a steady motion. This will ensure even paint application.
