Customer Reviews

Since there is no dip stick, I suggest measuring the oil when the pan is removed. 5 qts emptied out, and 4 went back in (Mercon V synthetic). (An expert told me they over fill it at the factory.) The removal of the filter itself is obvious. Clean the pan and examine debris. Clean the metal gasket. Model suv is XLS 4-WD, 2002. I decided the next time I do this, I am going to put the oil in the pan before bolting it on. (The fill hole plug is of special design. I bought a couple extra plugs. But I don't want to fill it that way.) Note that the fill hole is extended upward. It is supposed to be filled to this level. This transmission has 117,000 miles on it. I have found most not to get anywhere near this. (Keeping my fingers crossed.) I am going to replace the filter again soon as I would like to get as much of the old oil out as possible with contaminants. An expert can pump it all out. Had this done once on another vehicle, as it leaked out at night while driving. So I put in motor oil just to get home. On this vehicle, just picture me lowering the pan on the side of the highway in the middle of the night to add oil!!! Or even to pump it in. Guess I should tow a lift around also. Milicent says he has lost all faith in transmission shops over many years! Back at the ranch, one fellow only got 36,000 before the trainy went, and he babied it. I have a friend whose sole job was to rebuild transmissions on brand new cars at the dealers. I have witnessed the "why" of this! I am a union guy myself. But I don't buy into the abuse of power. While working under a wreck, I noticed a shiny new plug in a trainy. Upon examination, it appeared to be a new transmissiion, or a rebuilt one. I bought it as an extra. Loads of fun. Have some for yo self.
