Jerry cans are a must-have for any serious off-road driver, but lashing them on your four-wheel drive with ordinary ropes and straps is not enough to completely secure them in place. Or at least that’s what ARB is trying to say with its line of jerry can holders. One of the better known providers of vehicle parts and accessories for offroad use, ARB offers a line of jerry can holders that claims to provide a more secure way to keep those critical jerry cans for those trips beyond the beaten path.
In this review, we put the ARB jerry can holder to the test.

Things we liked
- The holder is composed of high-grade steel, making it more durable than jerry can holders that use nylon straps. The frame also has a protective black coating to shield it against the elements.
- Instead of a hinge, the holder uses a tab that inserts through a slot in the rear of the frame. This allows for a snugger and more secure fit for the jerry cans even when driving through some pretty rough terrain.
- Minimalist, compact design takes up a small space on the roof rack. Also, although ARB advertises it for use with its own line of roof racks, we found out that the holder can also be used in roof racks from other brands that have a similar design.
- The jerry can holder features a hasp for a padlock, providing added security against theft. Granted, the hasp is of a simple design and can be pried off with sufficient force using a crowbar, but it is sturdy enough to deter most thieves.
Things we didn’t like
- While it does a great job at keeping the jerry cans secure, the holder’s tab design tends to make the top tilt to one side and fall over. Though this is not that much of an issue as the holder is typically secured in a closed position, still it can leave scratches and dings on the surface of the cans and frame of the holder.
- The jerry can holder is designed exclusively to be mounted on the roof rack, so mounting on the rear is not an option.
- Can be a bit loose when installed on the roof rack from other aftermarket brands. It may result in some rattling or clanking noises when driving; it’s not that severe, but it is quite noticeable.
The bottom line
The ARB jerry can holder is a steel cage that can keep your jerry cans safely in place even when tumbling through rough terrain. It’s definitely a sound purchase for the off-road enthusiasts out there.
