Material : AcrylicBought a new set of window visors for your Ford Explorer? You're probably still enjoying the stylish look and function your new accessory provides. But the window visors won't look as shiny and new without proper care. Just like any part of your truck, the Ford Explorer window visors require maintenance from time to time so that it retains its appearance and keep wear at bay.
Here are some simple maintenance tips to follow for your Ford Explorer window visors.
The window visor easily attracts dust and debris from the road and can get dirty pretty quickly. Washing the window visor with water mixed with a bit of car shampoo does a great job in getting the visors spotless, but if you are a bit short on time, a quick wipe with a damp cloth will do. Make sure not to use ammonia-based cleaners, however, as these can damage the window visor surface.
The window visor is not designed to support weight and will buckle and snap if too much pressure is applied. Applying too much weight on the visor might also cause its adhesive tape to lose its grip and the visor to slip off.
If part of the window visor has come loose, it may mean the adhesive on that area has lost its stickiness and needs to be replaced. Don't hesitate to replace the adhesive as soon as possible; reattaching the visor with the old adhesive will not restore its hold on the surface and will only allow water and other contaminants to seep into other parts of the tape.
Does your visor have superficial scuffs or scratches? It might still be restored with a bit of buffing compound and elbow grease. Use a buffing compound that closely matches the color of the visor, and rub it in using a lint-free cloth in a circular motion. Do not use an electric buffer as its high rotation speeds will cause the visor to heat up and deform itself.
The steps to installing a window visor for the Ford Explorer may be easy, but ensuring a perfect fit and problem-free use in the future requires a bit of preparation. If not installed properly, the window visor may not work as well as intended.
The following are some pointers to consider when installing a Ford Explorer window visor:
Tip #1: Make sure that the window visor is compatible with the exact model year of your Ford Explorer.
An improperly fitted window visor will not hold properly or even prevent the window glass from completely closing.
Tip #2: Clean the area where you will install the visors.
This includes being free from dirt, grease, or even remnants of adhesive from the visor. If the surface is not clean, the adhesive will not stick on properly. Washing the area with car shampoo typically removes most contaminants, although you can follow it up with a degreaser to ensure there is no grease or oil on the surface.
Tip #3: To make installation easier and ensure the visor is aligned properly, mark the placement lines with a marker.
Have someone hold the visors in place for you, or mark the lines while you hold them in place.
Tip #4: Lower the windows at least halfway when installing the visor.
Doing so will make it easier to install the window visor, especially for the channel types, and prevent adhesive residue from sticking onto the window glass.
Tip #5: If you are replacing an old window visor with a new one, make sure that the residue of old adhesive doesn’t remain on the surface.
Placing the new adhesive strip on top of the remnants of the old one will have a weaker hold and eventually peel away. To remove the old adhesive, soak the area with mineral oil for several minutes and wipe it with alcohol. You may need to do this several times depending on the amount of adhesive residue left on the surface.
Tip #6: Planning on removing the visor in the future?
Use foam-mounting tape instead of the adhesive that came with the visor. Foam mounting tape is easier to remove and clean up after removing the visor.
Tip #7: Avoid using knives or other sharp objects to scrape off adhesive residue.
Doing so may leave scratches or cuts on the car’s paint.
