How can one diagnose problems in the motor of a BMW 528i window regulator?

It is fairly easy to detect a problem in the window regulator motor with a volt meter. When you push the switch and there is voltage or ground in the motor, the motor may be damaged. But if it's not grounded, it's likely to be in good condition.

 

What are the common symptoms of a broken BMW 528i window regulator?

There is a problem with the window regulator if there are strange mechanical rattling noises when the window is opened or closed. A jammed window is also a sure sign that the window regulator is damaged since the regulator is responsible for the opening and closing of a window. There is also a possibility for the window glass to fall inside the door due to a broken window regulator.

 

What causes a BMW 528i window regulator to fail?

One common cause why a BMW 528i window regulator gets damaged is when water seeps down inside the door during a heavy rain condition. The water can cause the connections in the window regulator to short, preventing the regulator from functioning well. The window regulator can also turn rusty due to water that got in it. A blown fuse also plays a huge part why a window regulator malfunctions. But this could be solved easily by replacing the fuse with a new one.

 

What causes the motor of the BMW 528i window regulator to burn out?

Misaligned glass tracks tend to overstress the window regulator motor, which eventually burns out the motor. Poor water drainage in the bottom part of the door also contributes to motor burnout. Glass gaskets wear out, allowing water to enter the door. Consequently, the motor gets drenched and then burns up.
