So what happens if you need a spot of fresh air, if your kid wants take-outs from his favorite fast food chain, or you simply want to let some foul odor out of your ride? Well, you won't be able to easily open thw windows. That's why it's important that you are able to recognize the warning signs of a failing window motor. Here are some of the most common problems with its window motor:
If you notice that it takes such a long time to open your window than it would normally take, then there's a chance that your motor needs a little lubrication-it's sometimes the friction that causes the mechanism to slow down to a crawl. While this is the most common cause, it's also possible that the wiring might be messed up a little-this leaves your motor woefully underpowered. Check on the wiring and replace any that seems out of sorts. If nothing works, it's better to have a professional rummage through the inner workings of your motor rather than do it yourself.
If you hit the switch and no movement comes from your windows, try it again and observe whether the motor is making a sound or not. If it is, you're in luck-you might be able to untangle the mess. You might need to simply lubricate the moving parts to get things going again. If, on the other hand, no sound comes from the motor, there's a good chance that you might need to replace the whole thing. Check first if all the wiring is connected-sometimes, in rare cases, the connection to the battery is merely severed and just needs reconnection.
Lastly, make sure that no one plays with the controls, so the motor doesn't wear itself out too easily. This is especially important if you have young kids who like to fiddle with buttons and switches.
Do you remember how hard it was to crank open an automobile's window back in the day because you had to-well-actually crank it? Nowadays, opening the windows of your Cadillac Escalade is as easy as pressing a button or toggling a switch. Behind all of that is the window motor. It's the heart of the system, really. Without it, all you will get from your pressing and toggling is a hollow click and very little else. And as anyone with a failed window motor will tell you, a lot of things become difficult-getting fresh air, ordering take-outs, and letting foul odors out. So it's absolutely important that you take good care of your window motor before it fails altogether. Here are some tips on how to do it:
Be gentle in using it.
Unsurprisingly, the most common cause of damage to the window motor is abuse. There's a fine line between constant use and abuse. Sure, it was designed to handle repetitive tasks for a long period of time and can indeed handle abrupt changes, but there is such a thing as too much. Repeatedly engaging the window control and abruptly changing the direction forces the motor to quickly change directions. This can ultimately cause the smaller and more vulnerable parts of the motor to break down-worst case if it gets stuck in one direction or the other.
Include it in an annual checkup.
This is at the very least! If possible, check it-or have it checked-at least twice a year. The trick is to look at all parts, no matter how small and to change out those parts that are clearly worn out. If it's necessary to replace the window motor altogether, make sure that you get a compatible motor. If everything is in place, then simple oil and lubricate the moving parts to make sure that everything goes smoothly.
Gently clean it.
Because the motor is within the door, it's rare that you will get to clean it up. Still, once a year, you should peek on its condition and wipe it off with a clean rag-no need for solvents or soap.
