Shopping for Dodge Wheel Hub
- I was driving my Dodge truck to work yesterday when suddenly I can feel my brake pad getting in contact with the rotor without me stepping on the brakes. Is there a problem with my brakes?
When you press on the brake pedal, the caliper should press the pads against the rotor; that's how the brake system works. But, the pad should not come into contact with the brake rotor at any other time. This does not automatically mean though, that there is a problem with your brakes. Intermittent contact between the pad and rotor while you are driving is a sign that your Dodge wheel hub is bent and may need replacement.
- I know that one of the ways to distinguish a wheel hub problem is when there is noise coming from under the vehicle. But, how do I know that the wheel hub is what's really causing the noise?
Although you should not ignore new or unusual noises, diagnosing your vehicle's problems by sound alone is an inexact science and should not be taken as it is. It is true that a bad Dodge wheel hub assembly is usually indicated by noises from the area of the wheels; but, not all strange sounds from the wheels area are assembly-related or wheel bearing-related. It could be from a bad CV joint or brake-related. However, if you hear chirping, squealing or grinding sounds that have different intensities at different speeds and gets louder or softer when turning; you have to check the hub assembly and wheel bearings. These are common indication that there is indeed a problem with the hub. Another indication is when you hear a humming that comes when you drive and increases when you turn the steering wheel.
- I know that wheel vibrations or wobbles are also indicative of a bad wheel hub assembly or bearing. How do I check if indeed that is the problem with my Dodge truck?
Any signs of a “play” in the wheels should be checked immediately. Any degree of wiggle or movement in the tires is an indication that you will likely need to change your Dodge wheel hub bearing. Tires should have very little to no play. To check the bearings without taking off the wheels, you can use an auto jack and jack stands to raise the vehicles. Try shaking the wheels; if there is an excessive movement, your wheels have play and you need hub bearing replacement.
- I understand that one way or another, a vehicle part is bound to fall apart. However, I've read somewhere that wheel hub assemblies should last as long as the vehicle. What are the factors that contribute to a hub's early demise?
Technically, a wheel hub is designed to last the life of the vehicle. However, it can get damaged in different ways and fail. The most common cause of premature wheel hub and bearing failure is a serious auto accident. The hub assembly can also get damaged by hitting debris on the road and traversing roads with extremely deep pot holes.
- What does a damaged mounting plate means in relation to a vehicle's wheel hub assembly?
Your vehicle's wheel hub is mounted to the suspension system in the rear via four bolt holes. When the backing plate where these bolt holes are located gets damaged, the hub will also get damaged and you will need to replace it. It is dangerous to drive with a damaged mounting plate because the wheel is not held securely to the vehicle.
