The weatherstrip seals are what make the interior of your Ford F-350 quiet and comfortable, which are more than good reasons why they should be maintained. While factory weatherstripping is made of high-quality synthetic rubber, they can still succumb to age and wear. But with proper care and maintenance, you can keep your Ford F-350 weatherstrip seal in good condition for quite a long time. Here are some maintenance tips that can help you out:
Weatherstrip seals are affixed at the assembly plant with heavy-duty adhesive, but this can weaken over time especially if the adhesive has been penetrated by moisture and debris. Eventually, this will cause the weatherstripping to come loose. Loosened weatherstripping can be repaired by re-applying adhesive onto the back of the strip. Make sure to apply only small amounts at evenly spaced locations across the strip and press firmly to ensure good contact with the adhesive. We also recommend holding the weatherstripping with masking tape for around 45 minutes to ensure the adhesive bonds well with both surfaces.
Aside from adhesive, weatherstripping is also secured by a series of metal screws. These screws do not usually come off on their own, but accidental rips or damage to the weatherstrip seals can pry the screws off their mounting. Corrosion is also a problem. So when inspecting the weatherstripping, make sure all the screws are present and are in good condition.
There are many benefits of regularly spraying the weatherstripping with silicone lubricant. First, it keeps the rubber from becoming brittle and cracked due to drying out over time. The oil can also prevent the strips from sticking in the door frame particularly during the winter months. Most silicone-based lubricants available in stores today come in a spray can, so application is as simple as spraying the entire length of the weatherstripping and wiping off the excess with a clean cloth.
Most mechanics recommend spraying the strips with lubricant at least once every year, particularly before the winter season. But if you notice that the seals are already drying out, don't hesitate to treat it as soon as you can.
Do you hear whistling sounds while driving your Ford F-350 or notice wet spots on the dash and carpet after a downpour? If it's a yes, the weatherstrip seals may need replacing. The Ford F-350's weatherstripping is responsible for sealing the cabin from the wind, rain, and dirt, and once it fails due to wear or structural damage, that seal is broken and needs replacement.
Replacing the Ford F-350 weatherstrip seal can be a messy task, but the process is not as difficult compared to replacing other parts of your car. And if you are going to do some weatherstrip seal installation in the near future, here are some tips that can make the job an easier one.
Tip #1: Clean the area where the new seals are to be placed.
This includes washing the door or window frame to remove any dust and dirt on the surface and peeling off the old weatherstrip. You can use your preferred car shampoo for cleaning, although we recommend using a soft-bristled brush instead of a sponge to scrub the area as it can reach into and dislodge dirt from the crevices and other hard-to-reach areas. For the old weatherstrip, use weatherstrip remover to soften the rubber before pulling it out.
Tip #2: Remove the old weatherstripping carefully.
Resist the urge to go Hogan on the weatherstripping and try to rip it in one go. Although it may not be obvious, the weatherstrip seals are secured in place with screws and extrastrong adhesive. Check for and loosen any screw keeping the stripping in place, and allow the weatherstrip remover to soak onto the adhesive for several minutes before attempting to remove the seal.
Tip #3: Clean and sand the new seals.
Chances are that the weatherstrip seals arrived in a dusty state with bumps on the surface left over during the molding process. These can prevent the seals from mounting properly, so wash the seals and wet sand any surface irregularities with fine-grit sandpaper before installation.
Tip #4: Apply only a small amount of seal adhesive.
As a rule of thumb, the seals should have tiny beads evenly spaced across its length. The adhesive can spread quickly once the seals are pressed in place, not to mention making cleanup more difficult.
