The weatherstrip seals of the Ford Bronco are designed to keep the elements out from the cabin, but they will eventually fail to function effectively if you don't observe regular maintenance. In this guide, we'll show you some simple tips on maintaining the Ford Bronco weatherstrip seal.
Dirt and mud can hinder the seals from working effectively as well as accelerate wear, so these must be cleaned off as soon and as often as possible. You can safely wash the strips with warm water and car shampoo, followed by spraying a coat of silicone-based lubricant to help retain the seal's flexibility.
Cleaning the weatherstrip will also give you the opportunity to inspect the seals for signs of damage and wear. Three key things you need to check include cracks, gaps, and brittleness of the weatherstrip material. You should also check the degree of severity of the damage. Gaps in the weatherstrip seal may still be fixed by reapplying adhesive on the strip rather than replacing the entire piece. For weatherstrips secured by metal screws or fasteners, make sure to check the hardware for rust as well.
Do the weatherstrip seals come off every time you open the door? You can stick them back into place by reapplying weatherstrip adhesive on the strip. With the door frame free of dust and old adhesive residue, you can now apply a thin bead of adhesive at the center of the strip. Let it dry for several seconds and press the strip back into place. Clean off any excess adhesive with brake cleaner.
During winter, water can freeze around the weatherstrip, making it difficult if not impossible to open. Under such circumstances, do not open the door by force as this may also rip the weatherstripping as well as potentially damage the door handle and locking mechanism of your car. Instead, pour warm water around the seal of your door to help melt the ice that's keeping the door shut. We also recommend spraying and wiping the seals with penetrating oil to prevent moisture from sticking onto its surface.
Leaky, rattling car doors are almost always caused by worn or damaged weatherstripping, so once you notice the doors in your Ford Bronco have begun whistling, better take a gander at the weatherstrip seals to see if they need replacing. Luckily, installing a new Ford Bronco weatherstrip seal is easy enough for anyone to do without needing help from a mechanic - provided that you have the tools and peripherals needed for the job.
If you are planning on replacing the weatherstrip seals on your Ford Bronco, here are some tips that can help you get the job done right:
Tip #1: Repair vs. replacing?
Before you strip off that old weatherstripping in your Bronco, check whether it can still be saved. If the weatherstrip seals still appear to be in good shape and are simply letting in air or water in one part of the seal, consider applying weatherstrip adhesive or a clear silicone sealer to plug along the areas that leak.
Tip #2: Gently peel off the old weatherstrip seal.
Weatherstripping usually has rubber studs that help secure it in place around the door frame, and forcefully pulling the seals may cause the studs to rub against and peel off the paint. Make sure all of the screws are removed before stripping, and if the seals are particularly stubborn, spray weatherstripping remover around the area and wait until the seal softens before continuing.
Tip #3: Make sure that all of the old weatherstripping is gone.
Old weatherstripping residue will prevent the new seals from sticking onto the frame properly and may become the source of leaks in the future. You can use weatherstripping remover to strip off any old weatherstripping left over.
Tip #4: Clean the new weatherstripping first before installing.
Rinse the seals with water to remove dust and sand or any rough spots and bumps on the surface. Make sure that the entire length of the seal is smooth and clean before you set it on the frame.
Tip #5: Apply weatherstrip adhesive sparingly.
You only need a small bead of adhesive to ensure the seals stick properly onto the frame. Too much adhesive will spill over the edges and cause a mess.
