No matter how ruggedly looking your D150 is from the outside, you still deserve a comfy interior to at least minimize your driving fatigue. The weatherstrip seal is among those components that help give you a comfortable ride by preventing outside elements like rain, wind, and noise from getting into the interior via the gaps between the doors and window glass and their respective frames. The weatherstripping efficiently seals those gaps, so outside elements don't stand a chance of finding their way into the cabin. With all its benefits, it is your responsibility to keep your Dodge D150 weatherstrip seal in good shape. Here are some tips on how you can do that:
If you usually use your Dodge truck in doing heavy duty tasks and in driving on rugged terrains, even its weatherstripping can get filthy, too. So along with your every car wash every time you get home from off-roading, it won't hurt if you take a few minutes cleaning your weatherstrip seal as well. You can do that using warm soapy water and a sponge. Just make sure to rinse the soap residue with clean water afterwards and wipe the rubber to dry using a clean towel.
After cleaning the weatherstrippping, it is a good idea to protect and condition it. This can be done by coating the entire weatherstrip surface with a generous amount of silicone-based spray. Allow the conditioner to do its wonders on the rubber before wiping the weatherstripping for excess spray. The conditioner will bring back the rubber's shine and make it more capable of beading water away.
While cleaning and conditioning the weatherstripping, you should also take the chance to inspect its entire length for cracks or pinholes. Also check for bulging or any part of the rubber that no longer sits well on the frame. If you noticed any imperfection, deal with it immediately to prevent it from getting more serious. Some weatherstripping problems can still be remedied, but if you noticed that the rubber has already lost its pliability, then you should consider replacement because that means it is no longer capable of doing its job.
The weather these days seems unpredictable. It may be scorching hot in the morning when you left home, but while in the middle of your drive, you may just find yourself careening through a heavy downpour. That said, it pays big time if you always make your truck ready for harshest of weather. One thing you should pay attention to is your D150's weatherstrip seal. If you noticed that it no longer has the same pliability as before or there are obvious cracks and pinholes, you shouldn't think twice in having it replaced to prevent wind noise and rainwater from seeping and making you uncomfortable inside. Should you decide to do the installation without the help of a pro, here are some tips that you should keep in mind:
Tip #1: Soften or condition the weatherstrip seal before installing it.
One way to prevent the weatherstripping from developing cracks and aging prematurely is to condition or soften it first before installing it. Conditioning the rubber enhances its pliability and thus, its efficiency. To condition the weatherstripping, you have to clean it first using water, dish soap, and soft sponge. Rinse it thoroughly and wipe it dry with a clean towel. Soften the rubber weatherstrip by applying some silicone spray on a clean cloth and wiping it onto the rubber. You can also spray directly onto the rubber; just make sure to avoid oversprays. Allow the silicone to penetrate in the weatherstripping and repeat the process.
Tip #2: Make sure to rid the mounting surface of excess weatherstripping and adhesive
After removing your old weatherstripping, make sure to clean the mounting surface. Eliminate excess adhesive, weatherstripping, and other dirt that has been sticking into the surface using a flat putty knife or flathead screwdriver. Then wash it with water and dish soap. Rinse and allow it to dry naturally or wipe the surface dry with a clean towel. To be sure that the mounting surface doesn't have grease or anything that could affect the adhesion of the weatherstripping, you can also clean the surface with alcohol wipes.
Tip #3: Allow the newly installed weatherstrip to sit well before opening and closing the door.
Once your new weatherstrip has been installed, allow it to sit well in place before using the door. Constant closing and opening of the door while the weatherstripping is freshly installed can affect its ability to adhere well onto the door frame and may cause it to fall off prematurely.
