How to Get Your BMW 318i Water Pump Properly Working
A water pump has a simple function, yet it is very important in the maintenance of the engine. This device circulates coolant between the radiator and the engine, which prevents the engine from overheating. Thus, a malfunctioning water pump poses serious threat to the overall condition and performance of your vehicle. The following are problems usually encountered with a BMW 318i water pump and what you can do about them:
Bearing failure
What usually causes a water pump failure is a problem with the pump's bearing, which is often accompanied by a leak. This leak can be found at the bottom of the pump, coming out of the weep hole. However, it is not evident when the engine is shut off. In this case, you would have to run the engine before conducting a pressure test to confirm a water pump failure.
Simply remove the radiator cap and make sure that the engine is cool before you do so. Fill the radiator until it reaches the normal level. Then, pump a radiator pressure tester up to 15 pounds. If leaks start to show up especially in the radiator, hoses, and around the engine, your water pump must be replaced.
Another component that you might want to consider testing is the water pump pulley. Look closely if it bounces once you start your car or it appears to be out of rounds. Replace the pulley if you observe any of these irregularities or else the bearing might eventually suffer and wear out.
Shaft failure
A water pump shaft usually fails as a result of bearing failure. It becomes loose, and one way of verifying this problem is by holding the fan and wobbling it. If the shaft moves, then it is definitely worn out. You need to replace this component immediately.
Squeaking
Water pumps naturally wear over time, which becomes noticeable once you hear a rhythmic squeak. This sound is an indicator that your water pump already needs replacement. Your radiator may also produce the same noise, but its failure would be pretty obvious by that time. So you don't have to worry about being confused.
Your water pump is often regarded as the heart of your vehicle's cooling system. It is in charge of allowing the coolant to flow through the hoses, radiator, and engine block so that overheating can be prevented. Check for leaks.
A seal or a gasket can be found on the water pump, and it is tasked to prevent coolant from seeping out of the bearing. However, due to rust or other contaminants, the water pump seal gets worn out and starts leaking. Pay close attention to the weep hole. If leaks are present around that area or you notice coolant trailing down your engine, it means that your pump needs to go.

Pulley
Make sure that the pulley assembly is properly aligned. Check its condition by starting your car and observe if it would bounce. If it does, this means that the pulley is out of bounds and needs to be replaced. Shaft

Replace the water pump.
Generally, water pumps last a long time. However, it is advisable to replace it when you are also about to change the timing belt. Be careful during the water pump replacement, though. Also, make sure that before you remove the old pump, the radiator and the block are cleaned. This step is important to keep the new pump from possible damage.
