Series : GM Original Equipment SeriesProduct Fit : Direct FitDid you know that your Chevrolet Malibu's vapor canister has been keeping you and your passengers safe from pollutants caused by fuel? For the longest time, it has been absorbing the fuel vapors to keep it from being released in the atmosphere that could harm the environment. When it gets saturated or its lines develop cuts or cracks, you and your passengers are at risk of inhaling harmful fumes that are dangerous to your health. Before this happens, follow these useful troubleshooting tips on how to diagnose some problems that could be related to a defective Chevrolet Malibu vapor canister:
So you have probably smelled it; the stench of fuel that you should never smell. The fuel fumes that the vapor canister has been absorbing have leaked. When this happens, you can start your troubleshooting by removing all of the lines from the canister and start your vehicle. If there is any fuel coming through the lines, then it is messed up. Check for any crossed lines or cuts in the fuel vapor hoses or tubes, but if there is no fuel coming from any of the lines, then your vapor canister must be full of fuel. You can either clean the vapor canister if it is relatively new, or replace it if it is already old.
If you have failed in the emission test several times now, but there seems to be no problem with your exhaust system, then there could be a problem with your vapor canister. It could either be leaking the gas fumes that it should be absorbing, or it is already oversaturated. To confirm this, check if there is any puddle of gas near the area where the canister is located. You can also stick your finger in the end of the hose and check if there is wetness. If there is, then your canister is already oversaturated. A quick fix could be done by cleaning the canister using a carburetor cleaner. Put some into the vent pipe and shake the canister to remove the gas vapor buildup. Drain it afterwards.
Your Chevrolet Malibu vapor canister has been keeping your vehicle safe from harmful fuel vapors and fumes that cannot be released to the atmosphere. Instead of releasing them, the fuel vapors are being pulled inside the canister by a vacuum, and they are burned inside when the engine is running. Proper maintenance of this valuable component would keep it from leaking toxic fumes and other problems. Here are just some of the tips that you can do to keep it a Chevrolet Malibu vapor canister from wearing out:
Clean the vapor canister regularly.
If you haven't replaced the stock vapor canister of your vehicle, chances are, it is already filled with the fuel fumes that could make it unable to absorb some more. This also happens if you fill your tank with gas most of the time. What you can do to keep the canister from overflowing is to clean it once in a while. Remove the canister from your vehicle and place it in a flat surface. Use an air compressor to fill the canister up to 50 psi. Once it is full, put the air line nozzle into the valve on top of the canister. Release the air using your hand. Check if the canister is already clean before reinstalling it. An easier alternative would be pouring a carburetor cleaner in the vent pipe and shaking it to remove the dirt inside. Drain the cleaner afterwards and reinstall it. Voila! Your vapor canister is as good as new.
Check the hoses and tubes for cuts and cracks.
A common cause of fuel vapor leaks is a broken or cracked hose or tube that connects the canister to the other components. Make it a habit to check the tubes and hoses for any signs of wearing out, like cracks and cuts, and seal or replace them immediately. This is to prevent it from leaking the gas, which could be harmful to the engine and the other components as well. Make sure to also clean the hoses to ensure that it is free from debris, which could cause it become prone to wear and tear.
