Like other pickup trucks in Chevy’s stable, the Silverado 1500 is built to be tough and dependable. It’s not just designed for work but also for some play, making it fun and comfortable to drive. But as you drive the light-duty pickup truck over speed bumps and potholes and encounter some angled driveways and other road irregularities, your Chevrolet Silverado 1500 valance can get cracked, dented, or heavily damaged. Since the panel is low-hanging, this can be an easy target for air-tossed rocks and other damaging road elements.
The valance, which is also known as front lips, bumper valance, lower valance panel, and lower bumper trim plate, can be trim pieces or filler body panels. It is installed just below the bumper of your truck and can be two separate panels placed on the front or the rear of the vehicle.
The panels cover the passenger and the driver side. Since they are not whole strips, they do not cover the entire width of the front or rear of the vehicle. Valance panels cover the skeletal parts of the truck, keeping the unpolished and rougher parts of the undersides and corners well hidden from plain sight. As a cover, the panel also keeps mud, road grime, and sand from getting into the chassis, protecting it against wear and tear.
The valance placed on the front of the vehicle can be used to hold the fog lights and the engine bay’s grille, while the valance panel on the rear may also work as a cover for the gap between the dual exhaust pipes on opposite sides. Considering their position and location on the truck, the valance can help direct airflow under the vehicle body, similar to how an air dam works. To a certain degree, this may improve the truck’s aerodynamics. The valance can be a narrow strip or a larger piece with an airflow lip.
Although valance panels are usually made of the same material used for the bumper, this is not the case for all vehicle designs. Steel valance panels are commonly used on older vehicle models with steel bumpers. On more recent models, plastic valance is used to match with a steel and chrome bumper or with a plastic bumper cover.
For the Silverado 1500, the valance replacement typically comes in plastic. Plastic valance panels are lighter, which means they will not be adding more weight to the vehicle and will not be affecting fuel efficiency. Compared to sheet metal body panels, plastic valance panels are much easier to install as they will not require extensive bodywork.
The specs of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 varies per model year. The truck not only comes in different engine types and displacements but also in different cab lengths and cargo bed sizes. Whether you are looking for a rear or a front valance for Chevy Silverado, you have to look for replacement valance panels that are built for the actual specs of your truck (i.e., 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 valance). The valance can be bought per trim piece or as a complete set. The valance may also be a part of a kit that includes the bumper filler, bumper bracket, and bumper.
With regard reducing air drag, there are additional accessories that can be installed to assist the valance. It is called the bumper canard. These are small pieces of plastic or fiberglass materials mounted on the corners of a valance to control airflow on the sides of the vehicle and increase frontal pressure. More so, it can improve the Chevrolet Silverado 1500's appearance as it looks like gills on the sides of the valance. Each set of bumper canards can cost up to $25.
Since the valance is located right at the very front of the truck, it is very prone to mud, gravel, and even bugs sticking and causing dirt problems. Good thing is that it can easily be removed with a simple wash with soap and water. For dirt that is hard to remove, penetrating oils and sprays will do the job as dried-up grease makes the dirt stick to the valance even more.
Aside from its aesthetic purposes, the valance is a helpful part in improving fuel efficiency. This is especially helpful in large vehicles such as the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Basically, the valance's shape helps in reducing air drag, making it easier for the vehicle to move forward. As a result, less fuel is consumed. The valance can improve fuel efficiency for up to 0.5 mpg, a considerable increase in the long run.
Most of the valance sold online and on actual stores have holes intended for fog lights. More so, a valance that comes with the actual fog light assemblies is quite a rare find. A valance of this kind can cost up to $400. With this, it is recommended to buy a holed valance and compatible fog lights separately instead. A regular valance with holes can only cost $150, and fog lights only cost $50 apiece.
