Shopping for Chevrolet Turn Signal Switch
Turn signals are important to the safety of the driver as well as of other motorists and pedestrians. When one of the related components, like your Chevrolet turn signal switch, is not working properly, this may pose as a safety hazard. Keep in mind that the wiring of the brake lights goes through the turn signal switch, so if your signal switch is broken, the brake lights may not work as well.
To fix a broken switch, here are some steps to guide you:

Things you'll need:
- Flat screwdriver or Torx driver
- Digital multimeter (optional)
- Rag
- Electronic contact cleaner
- Protective gloves
- Safety glasses
Step 1: Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Wait for the airbag system to power down; this will take around fifteen minutes.
Step 2: Start taking out the steering column cover by loosening the screws at the bottom half of the plastic steering cover. Take note of the location, length, and thread style of each screw so it will be easy for you to put them back later. Detach the plastic snap clips and disengage the two parts of the column cover. Set the two halves aside.
Step 3: Usually, hex-head or Torx screws secure the Chevrolet turn signal switch in place. You can remove these screws using a Torx driver. If you do not have one, you can use a flat-head screwdriver instead. Make sure to gently loosen them, as you do not want to wear out the thread of the said screws.
Step 4: After removing the screws, pull out the switch and detach the electrical connector. If the problem is a defective canceling mechanism, you must change the entire signal unit. However, if the problem is the intermittent wiper operation, you can use a digital multimeter to test the connectors on the back of the switch for resistance readings on each setting. Then, use the manual to compare the results.
Step 5: If the readings are off, try cleaning the variable resistor contacts. Clean the variable resistor by spraying the right electronic contact cleaner into the body of the resistor to improve electrical contact. You might want to check your Chevrolet's fuses to make sure they are not blown. When your signals only flash in one position and are frequently off in the other direction, you may have to replace the burnout or defective bulb. You can perform a test by turning the signals in the position where they are not working and check the exterior bulbs. Replace the bulbs as needed.
Step 6: Reattach the electrical connector and put the switch back. Make sure to tighten the screws properly. Reattach the plastic snap clips carefully and reinstall the steering column cover. Take note of the correct placement of each screw.
Step 7: Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
Step 8: Test the switch.
