How to Care for the Honda Ridgeline Tonneau Cover
The Honda Ridgeline tonneau cover does require some care and maintenance, despite the advertisements from manufacturers saying that they are maintenance free. Heat, UV exposure, dirt, wind, and other factors can quickly wear out the cover if you don't maintain it well, so if you want your investment to last longer, it is essential that you take care of it properly and on a regular basis. The following are some key pointers to follow:
- Clean the tonneau cover with vinyl cleaner.
Tonneau covers are often made of heavy duty vinyl, which is highly resistant to scratches and moisture but cannot be cleaned properly with ordinary soap and water. Instead, you will need to use vinyl cleaner. Sold in spray bottles, vinyl cleaner is specially formulated to remove dirt and stains from the vinyl without drying it out. Some cleaners also have UV-shielding compounds, which could help repel stains.
To use the vinyl cleaner, rinse the cover with lukewarm water and spray the cleaner directly onto the fabric. Using a soft-bristled brush, scrub the vinyl surface until foam starts to appear and the stains come off. Rinse the cover again and wipe it dry with a microfiber towel. Do not air-dry a wet tonneau cover as this will leave streaks on the surface.
- Do not leave the cover partially open.
Tonneau covers are designed to be used in a fully open or fully closed position, but not in between. And doing so is likely to damage the rails of the tonneau or the tonneau cover material especially while driving, as well as exposing the contents of the truck to damaging elements. In fact, many manufacturer warranties do not cover the damage caused by the cover being partially open.
- Keep the rails clean and lubricated.
Dirt and small rocks tend to build up on the rails, preventing the cover from opening and closing properly. You can remove buildup with car shampoo and warm water; you can use a brush to remove gunk in the hard-to-reach corners. Afterwards, you can lubricate the rails with penetrating oil. Aside from keeping the covers running smoothly and noise-free against the rails, the oil also helps prevent corrosion from occurring. Simply spray directly on the rails and wipe the excess with a rag.

You can have the tonneau cover installed in an auto repair shop, but it is actually easy enough to do on your own even if you have minimal experience in installing car accessories.

Tip #1: Ensure that the cover rails are compatible with your truck bed.
Not all tonneau covers are created equal, as each one is tailored to match the dimensions of a specific truck make and model. The rails, in particular, need to be a perfect match in order for the cover to open and close properly. So before mounting anything, make sure to test the cover rails first for a correct fit. Some of the things you need to check include whether the cover rails are of the correct length or width, whether they mounts on top or between the bed's side panels, and whether the bed rail caps will allow the cover to form a weather-tight seal.
Tip #2: For retractable covers, mount the canister first before the rails.
Covers that retract into a canister must be installed before the cover rails. Place the canister on the edge of the bed rails next to the cab; make sure that it is centered correct or else the rails will not be in perfect alignment.
Tip #3: Use shims to fill any gaps.
The tonneau cover might still feel loose on the underside even if it is matched to fit the Ridgeline, but this can often be fixed with the use of shims. Made of plastic or rubber, these shims are placed on gaps underneath the rail to secure it in place. However, if the gap is more than 10mm wide, it may be better to use shim brackets. These brackets are not usually included with the kits and must be purchased separately.
