Care and Maintenance Tips and Tricks You Can Use for the Ford F-350 Super Duty Tonneau Cover
The tonneau cover of your Ford F-350 Super Duty can last as long as the service life of the truck, but you can only achieve this through regular care and maintenance. Although tonneau covers are made of durable vinyl or a plastic shell, they are not vulnerable and will succumb to wear and damage over time. Cleaning and maintaining a Ford F-350 Super Duty tonneau cover is not as hard as it sounds and will only take one or two hours of your time to accomplish. Check out these helpful maintenance tips that you can use for tonneau covers:
- Wash the cover regularly.
Washing the tonneau covers on a regular basis is one of the best ways to combat premature wear and damage. Most car shampoo sold in the market is safe for use on tonneau covers, although there are also specially formulated tonneau cover cleaners available that provide additional benefits such as UV protection. Make sure to use only a wash mitt or convertible top brush when cleaning the cover, as hard-bristled brushes and the like may leave scratches on the surface.
- Treat vinyl covers with vinyl protectant.
After every wash session, it is also recommended that you spray protectant on your vinyl tonneau cover. As its name implies, vinyl protectant helps protect the cover against fading, cracking, and hardening due to constant exposure to damaging elements. Some vinyl protectant products in the market can also help the vinyl repel moisture and stains.
Vinyl protectants are usually sold in a spray bottle, so application is as simple as spraying them directly onto the vinyl and wiping it dry with a microfiber cloth. Make sure to do this in a shaded area, however, as direct sunlight may cause the protectant to dry too quickly and leave streaks.
- Make sure the rails are clean and free of rust.
The rails on the sides of the truck bed tend to accumulate dirt and rust over time, leading to difficulty in opening or closing the cover as well as deterioration of the rails itself. This is why once the rails become dirty, clean them by scrubbing the dirt off with a brush and mild soap and water. For rust spots, you can apply rust dissolver gel on the affected areas and then scrub clean. However, if the rails are already severely corroded, replacement is a better option.
Installing a tonneau cover on the truck bed of the Ford F-350 Super Duty can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours depending on the type of cover you have and your level of skill and experience. Hard-shelled tonneau covers, for instance, take longer to install compared to roll-up covers. But whatever type of cover you have for your Ford F-350 Super Duty, it is important that the installation is done properly. To that end, we've listed down some installation tips you might find helpful when fitting a new Ford F-350 Super Duty tonneau cover to your ride.
Tip #1: Clean the bed rails.
The tonneau cover assembly usually includes element seals designed to stick onto the surface of the bed rails, but these will not adhere properly if the rails are coated with dust, dirt, and grime. So before starting, wash the rails first with a wash mitt and car shampoo. After washing, you can also wipe the rails with a piece of cloth dipped in alcohol to remove any residue left over by the car polish.
Tip #2: Make sure the clamps grip the rails correctly.
Before tightening the clamp with your wrench, make sure that the teeth engage the grooves on the rail. Otherwise, the clamp can slip out of place and may cause the cover to rattle or even fall off. Once the clamps are in correct position, tighten them with a wrench. You can also using a spring clamp to hold the rails temporarily while you adjust and tighten them.
Tip #3: If you have a tonneau cover that comes with a canister, mount this first.
Commonly included in roll-up tonneau covers, the canister must be installed first to prevent it from blocking the cover. Place the canister on the edge of the bed rails next to the cab, and align it so that the canister is dead center on the bed. Keep in mind that if the canister is not aligned properly, the cover may not close or open fully.
Tip #4: Adjust the storage straps to ensure a sealed fit.
Most tonneau covers are designed to accommodate several models from the same make, so you may need to do a bit of adjustment on the storage straps to attain a perfect fit for the cover. Simply pull the strap to tighten and slip the bracket down to loosen.
