How to Diagnose Mazda B2000 Tail Pipe Problems

The tail pipe of Mazda B2000 is strategically located at the underside of the vehicle to dispose of harmful exhaust gases away from the engine and the cabin, but it comes at the expense of the pipe being more vulnerable to wear and damage compared to other parts of the B2000's exhaust system. Dirt, rocks and other road debris can hit and damage the tail pipe when driving at high speeds, while constant exposure to the elements makes it especially prone to corrosion. Over time this will cause the tail pipe to break down, which, in turn, leads to a variety of exhaust problems. The following are some of the most common signs of Mazda B2000 tail pipe wear and how to troubleshoot them.

Rusted pipes

Rust in the tailpipes is common given its location underneath the chassis. While minor rusting on the tail pipe surface is relatively harmless and won't affect its performance, severe corrosion can compromise the integrity of the pipe. Inspect the entire length of the tail pipe and check for visible signs where rust has eaten away at the pipe body. In addition, poke at the parts of the pipe you suspect to be rusted inside with a pair of pliers or a screwdriver end. If you are able to poke into the pipe or feel it give against the tool, the pipe is seriously corroded and needs to be replaced.

Cracks and fissures

Damage caused by flying road debris as well as improper installation can cause the pipe to crack and leak exhaust into the cabin. Areas of the pipe that connects to other exhaust components - such as the exhaust manifold for example - are particularly prone to cracking, so make sure to inspect these regularly.

Strange noises

Abnormal noises coming out from the tail pipe may indicate a problem with the pipe or the muffler. If the sound is a low booming or hissing noise which gradually gets louder, the problem could be with a leaking muffler. On the other hand, if the sound is a recurring hiss or an unusual popping noise, it could be an indication of a damaged tail pipe. Also, if you hear a rattling noise while driving your car, check if any part of the pipe is dragging on the road. The mounting flange of the Mazda B2000 has been known to rust and break apart, particularly after years of use, causing the pipe to fall and drag against the ground.

The tail pipe of the Mazda B2000 is the most visible component of the pickup's exhaust system, but it is also one of the most vulnerable. Rocks and other flying debris can damage and render the tail pipe inoperable, while corrosion from constant exposure to moisture can slowly rot away the pipe body. But with proper care and maintenance, wear and damage to the tail pipe is reduced and, in case of complete failure, repaired or replaced as soon as possible to prevent more serious exhaust system-related problems. So if you want to get a long service life from your Mazda B2000 tail pipe and avoid breakdowns while on the road, simply follow these maintenance tips:

Check for any signs of rust or damage.

Make sure to examine the entire length of the pipe. Take note of any signs of cracks or fissures, especially in the area where the exhaust manifold connects to the cylinder and to the main pipe. Also, while minor spots of rust are relatively safe, severely rusted pipes should be replaced.

Clean the exhaust pipe periodically.

Regular cleaning of the tail pipe can help suspend the onset of wear and sustain its just-off-the-assembly-line appearance. You can use simple soap and water solution to clean the surface of the pipe, and for stubborn stains use an old toothbrush or a similar soft-bristled brush to prevent scratching the surface. After washing the pipe, let it dry and buff it out with polish. Make sure to polish all the way around the pipe so that it will look shiny and brand new from all corners.

Pay attention to any strange noises.

If you hear any abnormal noises coming out from the exhaust pipe of your B2000, turn off the engine immediately and check the pipe and muffler for damage. Usually, a low booming or hissing sound from the pipe indicates a malfunctioning muffler, while a popping noise could mean likely mean a leaking pipe. In addition, listen for any rattling or scraping noises from your pickup's rear end when driving: this could mean that one or more of the mounts securing the exhaust pipe to the chassis have failed and the pipe is being dragged across the ground.
