Common causes of malfunctioning tail lights
A failing Ford Explorer tail light poses a threat not just to you but to other drivers around you. Tail lights serve as the reference point to drivers behind you. Blown or damaged fuse
A fuse is a metal band enclosed in a plastic casing that’s designed to break when the electric flow becomes too high. It breaks to keep other electrical components from getting fried up. Burned out relay

Blown-up bulb
One of the most common and obvious causes of failing tail lights is a blown bulb. A bulb contains a filament inside the assembly, which converts electrical energy to light energy. If the filament breaks, it won’t be able to illuminate the gas inside the bulb. Other types of bulbs can fail differently, however, as the mechanism differs according to types of light sources. Failing brake light switch
A brake light that does not illuminate when braking is considered a tail light problem. If this is your case, your tail light may still be working properly. The problem could be due to a broken brake light switch. The brake light switch closes the circuit when you apply pressure on the brake pedal, allowing the electric current to complete the cycle and trigger your brake lights. If this switch is misaligned, it won’t be able to close the circuit and the brake lights will not illuminate.
