Electrode Core Material : Copper Electrode CoreReach : 0.75 in. ReachGap Size : OE ReplacementThe spark plugs on your Dodge B350 have the important function of giving life to your vehicle, as well as making sure it stays that way. However, various factors could affect its performance. These could range from overheating, foreign fluids infecting the part, physical damage, or an incorrect installation. If you want to keep your Dodge B350's spark plugs working as good as new, then it is time to pop out that hood, take the spark plug out and do some troubleshooting. Here are some common problems spark plugs encounter, as well as their causes:
If your Dodge B350's engine is misfiring or stalling lately, first check your spark plug if it has a thick carbon coating. This layer is usually made by driving across short distance too many times, which means the engine is still cool, or an air-fuel mixture that is too rich. Another way of checking is by rubbing your hand and feeling any sort of slipperiness in the spark plug. This could mean either oil or fuel is coating the part. If it is oil, then a cylinder or valve might have a leak, causing the oil to spill onto the spark plug. This weakens the electrode and insular section. Lastly, check if the spark plug is cracked. This type of damage is caused by an incorrect installation of the spark plug, usually by tightening it too much.
If your problem is related to your pistons, such as malfunctioning, then you need to check the spark plugs for a different kind or damage. First check the insulator leg area for any scorch marks or signs of it melting. These are caused by preemptive ignitions, abnormal combustion, and low heat range. If that area is cracked, then it means that the combustion problem is too severe or there was something wrong with the gap adjustment. Lastly, check the ignition tip if it has any physical damage. This happens when the thread reach is too long or some kind of debris collided into it from within the combustion chamber.
The Dodge B350 spark plug gives life to your car's ignition system. After prolonged usage, however, this part will slowly start to wear down. This causes your vehicle to encounter various troubles such as misfiring, engine stalling, or even exhaust problems. If you want to keep your Dodge B350's spark plugs in tiptop shape, then here are some handy maintenance tips for you to do in your garage.
Clean spark plugs when you can.
Always make sure that your Dodge B350 spark plug is nice and clean. Before doing so, however, remember to pull out the plug carefully, and not from the wire, as it could possibly tear and cause you more problems. Now, use a spray-on plug cleaner and a wire brush to remove the light deposits. If they are a bit tough, just use a knife. It is important that you never use anything that has an abrasive element in it. Lastly, when reinstalling the spark plug, be careful and refrain from putting it on too tightly. Give it around 15 lbs. worth of force at most.
Check for any signs of spark miss.
If the spark plug fails at certain times or erratically fires, then there might be a problem concerning the gapping of the part. These problems, called spark misses, are easily spotted when the engine sound is lower than usual. To check this, get a spark tester and attach it on the spark plug head. Then, turn on your engine and look at the tester. The timing of the sparks must be even and consistent. If it does not, then there is gap damage that must be remedied immediately.
Always install and reinstall carefully.
This cannot be stressed enough. A common pitfall amongst DIYers is that after they either fix, clean, or replace the spark plug, it still fails simply because of improper installation. When reinstalling the spark plug, first be sure that the threads are free and clean of dirt. Double-check the gap setting. But most importantly, tighten them with the force as recommended by the manufacturer. Never overtighten it.
