Which Ford Taurus model variants have shock absorbers and which ones have strut assemblies?
Most Taurus models have struts installed because they have been found more effective and efficient. Not only are these assemblies able to handle road shocks, they can also help carry the car's weight. However, the station wagon variant has shock absorbers installed as the rear damper. This is because shocks can adjust their air pressure from around 30 to 90 pounds per square inch (psi) in order to accommodate the weight of added loads.
Are there parts of a strut assembly that are reusable or will the entire thing need to be replaced from a Ford Taurus?
It may simply be easier to replace the entire strut assembly, but enterprising owners can save a few components if they want to save a few bucks. They can retain the coil springs that surround the shock absorber as long as they remove the ball joints and inspect the struts for further damages. If there are no signs of rust and if the Taurus doesn't bottom easily, then they can install the springs back. They can also keep the strut boots since these can prevent the strut from bottoming out. Finally, they might be able to keep the pinch bolts instead of breaking them off. They can only do so if the bolts have been previously replaced with a sturdier version and if the Taurus hasn't experienced cold northern winters.
Should the front-end alignment be checked after doing a strut replacement on a Ford Taurus?
Checking the front-end alignment on a Taurus isn't required after changing the struts except in certain circumstances. If the entire assembly was replaced and the spring was changed, the alignment must be checked because the ride height has changed. It would also be wise to check the alignment if there were problems during the replacement; or if the process affected the top caster, tie rod, or camber (if the Taurus has them).
