If your vehicle uses a manual transmission, then it is still using a flywheel. This is the component that keeps your engine running and makes it move more easily from a stop. But apart from this, your flywheel also has several other functions. If not for this component, parts of your engine would be in pieces because of the excessive vibrations created by the firing pistons. Also, your flywheel helps the starter gear wake up the engine by mating its teeth with those of the said gear. Because your flywheel has a friction surface that contacts with the clutch, you are then able to accelerate your vehicle with less effort when coming from a temporary stop. So, your flywheel is certainly an important part that needs to be replaced as soon as drag, pulsation, chattering, and slipping of the clutch occurs. We tested this component on a 2007 Subaru Tribeca and a 2005 Nissan Armada, and here is what we have to say:
Thumbs up
- The components just looked the same as the old ones removed from the Tribeca and the Armada. The units were solid, had teeth that were of the same size and distance, and had surfaces that were shiny and not rusted.
- Installing the component took only about an hour for each vehicle. We had to use the old bolts and two kinds of wrench for the job. The units fit perfectly on their mounting location on the Tribeca and the Armada.
- When we started the vehicles, we were satisfied with the response of the engines. They just started roaring right then and there. We ran the vehicles and did not experience any slipping or drag. There was also no pulsation and chattering around the clutch area.
Thumbs down
- The component did not include instructions for the installation. We could have used less time for the task had we known how to do the replacement in a systematic way.
- The unit did not come with new retaining bolts that would have made the attachment of the flywheel against the back of the crankshaft more secure.
The verdict
This is definitely one of the cheapest units out there, making it a good bet when replacing your worn flywheel. The unit has a good construction and material, and the warranty is not that bad. There is actually not much said online about this product, so we are quite undecided about its value and quality. But based from our test, it gave an acceptable performance. Perhaps, you would just need to test the unit for a few months to really determine if it is at par with other high-end brands.
