Volvo 850 Radiator Troubleshooting Tips

Your Volvo 850 radiator is the main reason why your car has not blown up yet. It constantly deals with a ton of pressure and heat, thus issues concerning this part are not that uncommon. The best way to prevent any radiator trouble is by regular inspection and diagnosis. To help you with that, here is a simple troubleshooting guide, listing down all common problems, their causes, and some fixes:

Overheating

Whenever your car starts to overheat, one of the most common causes is the radiator going bad. First thing to check is the coolant level. Take a look inside and see if the coolant level is up to standard. If not, then add the necessary amount of coolant.

Another area to check is the cap area. Put your hand over it and shake it for a bit. There should be tightness felt when doing so. If it is loose, then this might cause the coolant to spill, wasting all those precious fluids. Make sure that the cap is screwed tightly. If it is too loose, however, simply replace that specific part.

Lastly, you need to test whether your thermostat is functioning or not. Place your hand on the lower radiator hose and let your engine heat up for a bit. If you do not feel anything while the car is running hot, then this means that the thermostat is broken and must be replaced.

Coolant Leaks

If you notice any leaks from under your vehicle, then you should first see if there are any cracks coming from the radiator. Take out your flashlight and have a good look inside. Notice if there are any fluid movements even in idle. If there are, then fix the leak with sealants, which could be bought at any local car store.

If there are no problems in the radiator but it is still leaking, then consider the hoses. When inspecting them, see if there are any signs of rot, or whether they have turned brittle. In these cases, it is best to just replace the entire hose completely. However, if the hose is just loose, then just reattach them properly.

For the longevity of the radiator of your Volvo 850, maintenance must be made once in a while. To remove the hassle of looking at manuals or various websites, here is a short yet comprehensive list of what you should do to keep your Volvo 850 radiator running perfectly:

Cool down vehicle before doing any maintenance.

Turn off your vehicle and let the engine cool down for at least 30 minutes. Being hasty in wanting to fix your radiator will cause you to hurt yourself and leave you with pretty nasty burns.

Check for any component damage.

Take a close inspection of not just the radiator, but its related components as well, such as the hoses and water pumps. Coolant leaks could come from any of these parts, which would lead to the same overheating issue. Usually it is just a part going loose, which could be easily be fixed by reinstalling it properly. However, if there are cracks or the part is rotting, sealants from automotive stores could solve the issue, unless of course it is too much, in which case replacement is the only option.

Flush and replace coolant.

It is important that the fluid inside your radiator is clean and free from contamination. If there is any dirt or debris inside, it is going to greatly hinder the cooling process, which would let the engine just keep heating up until it goes beyond normal levels. When flushing out coolant, be sure to do it properly and not break any environmental laws. It is best that your replacement coolant is fresh and new.

Seals and hoses must be kept tight

Common sources for leakage problems are loose connections from the radiator seals and hoses. Nudge them a bit to see if they are loose and if so, tighten and secure them in place. However, do not force it if they are already too loose. Just buy new ones instead.

Keep coolant level high.

Radiator fluid must be kept at a certain level for it to function optimally. Make it a habit to take a peek inside and see if the amount if below threshhold. If it is, then just fill it back up.
