The Toyota Corolla debuted in 1996 as a subcompact hatchback. The nameplate received a major change within its 53-year production life, as it now competes in the compact car segment. It managed to climb up the ladder due to its reliability and simplicity. It’s now known as the world’s best-selling nameplate, with an all-time sales total of over 40 million units worldwide.
There are a number of tight competitors that rival the Toyota Corolla in the segment. How it was able to keep its cool and stand out among the rest is Toyota’s secret. What we do know, however, is that the radiator is what’s keeping the Corolla’s engine cool. If you’re in the market for Toyota Corolla radiators, here are some of the things you need to know.
A car’s radiator is part of an automotive cooling system that consists of tubes and small fins encased in a rectangular metal structure. It is mounted between the engine and the grille, near the cooling fan assembly. Its positioning is integral to the cooling system as air flow helps the radiator from heating up.
The main cooling agent that flows inside the radiator is the coolant. The coolant is the fluid that draws heat away from the engine through convection. To know more about the radiator, let’s take a closer look at how it functions.
If the coolant draws heat away from the engine, where does it dump it? After the coolant has absorbed the heat from the engine, the thermostat opens at a specified temperature, allowing the coolant to flow into the radiator. The heated coolant cools down inside the radiator through the process of convection.
There are two sources of air that cool down the heated coolant inside the radiator: the air being blown by the cooling fan and the air entering the grille as the car moves forward. The air flows through the radiator’s metal fins, cooling the coolant deep within the radiator core.
There are different classifications of radiators in the market based on the number of cores present in the assembly. There are radiators with one, two, three, or four cores. Keep in mind that the higher the number of cores a radiator has, the larger surface area for the heat to dissipate.
Apart from the number of cores, the radiator assembly’s material also plays a factor in heat transfer. The two common materials used in radiators are aluminum and copper. Aluminum is believed to be more efficient than copper, as it is stronger. The strength allows manufacturers to widen the tube without increasing the thickness of the walls.
There have been 12 generations of the Toyota Corolla, including the latest model. The vast model range affects part fitting and installation of the radiator. To ensure an accurate list for your specific Toyota Corolla unit, indicate the year, make, and model on the filter tab under the search menu. You can further modify the list by selecting from the different categories in the “Shop By” menu.
Toyota Corolla radiators typically cost around $130 to $400. You can choose from direct-fit or universal radiators. There are also different color finishes, namely Factory Finish, Natural, and Polished Aluminum. In addition, if you’re looking forward to upgrading your cooling system, there are performance replacement parts aside from the OE replacement radiators on the list.
If you’re worried about your engine not being cooled properly by your cooling system, then you need to pay close attention to your engine radiator. Here are some signs that your radiator badly needs a replacement.
A majority of radiators fail due to rust formation that clogs inside. If the coolant gets blocked by rust buildup, the radiator wouldn’t be able to cool it down and your engine could end up overheating.
There are varying factors that result in coolant leaks, such as cracks due to rust, clogging inside the hose, and other major system failures. If your coolant drops below the recommended level, the cooling system’s efficiency will drop. This will trigger the low coolant warning light on the instrument cluster.
The two aforementioned signs can both result in overheating. If your engine overheats, it should be your last warning to bring your car to your trusted mechanic. Overheating could ruin your engine, which is far more expensive to deal with compared to replacing your radiator.
