It is your Dodge Ram 2500 radiator that allows your truck to achieve maximum efficiency without compromising the condition of its engine. This component works by regulating the temperature of your engine through redistributing heat that travels through it. It contains fluids in the form of coolant, which passes through the engine to absorb excess heat. Because of its task plus age and other factors, your radiator can fail after sometime. Here are some indications of a malfunctioning radiator:
Overheating engine
If you notice that your engine has exceeded its normal operating temperature, your radiator or the other parts connected to it may be malfunctioning. One of the causes may be the thermostat. It works by regulating the amount of coolant that can flow through your radiator. These two components work together to give your engine optimum working temperature. However, the thermostat will not be able to send signals to your radiator if it is failing. As a result, your engine will overheat. Another cause is a broken radiator pump. The coolant that flows from your radiator to the engine passes through the pump. So if your radiator pump fails, the coolant will not be able to circulate properly. Hence, your engine will not be able to be cooled down if there is no coolant that will regulate its temperature.
Visible leaks
If there is a puddle of leaks forming underneath your vehicle, your radiator and its pump are possibly damaged. The leak usually occurs when your radiator gets corroded. It begins to crack so its coolant will tend to drip outside. Moreover, your radiator pump can also cause leaking. It is because the coolant that passes through it can escape if the pump has cracks or is already worn out.
Hissing or grinding noise
If you hear a sound similar to hissing or grinding while you are driving or even after you turn off the engine, it may be an indication of leaks coming from the radiator. When the leaking coolant causes your engine to overheat, the hissing sound usually occurs as a result. On the other hand, the grinding noise is usually caused by the leaks affecting the water pump bearing. If the grease of the bearing wears off because of the leaks, then it can eventually break and start to make the grinding noise.
