The Volkswagen Jetta keeps on stalling during idle. Does this indicate an issue with its oxygen sensor?
Engine trouble during idling cannot be directly attributed to having a faulty oxygen sensor. Although it may also cause rough engine idling and frequent misfires as well as activate the check engine light, these symptoms are not mainly due to faulty sensors and may also indicate malfunction in other engine components as well. The main symptoms shown by a problematic sensor are poor fuel economy and increase in emission levels. Running diagnostics will help isolate the problematic part; this is a way of checking if there is an issue with the oxygen sensor.
What is the difference between the upstream and downstream Volkswagen Jetta oxygen sensors?
Although the two types of sensors work together and have the same function (the vehicle's computer uses the data from these sensors to ensure proper air-fuel mixture), they differ in location and data source. Upstream oxygen sensor is located before the catalytic converter while the downstream sensor is placed after the catcon. Upstream sensors measure the pollutant levels coming from the engine and the amount of unburned fuel in the combustion chambers. On the other hand, downstream sensors measure the pollutants coming through the converter and out of the tailpipe.
Which diagnostic trouble codes indicate a problem with the Volkswagen Jetta oxygen sensor?
There are numerous engine codes that refer to oxygen sensor problems. P0130 and P0150 codes are set when voltage from the oxygen sensor is out of range. P0139 and P053 refer to slow response of oxygen sensor circuit. P0140 and P0154 indicate absence of activity within the oxygen sensor, while P0141 and P0155 indicates malfunction of the oxygen sensor's heating circuit. Other codes may mean the same thing; they may only vary depending on the location of the problematic part (locations can be identified using the bank and sensor numbers.)
