Will the Toyota Camry run without an oxygen sensor?
Yes. The Toyota Camry will still work without an oxygen sensor. Your car, however, will perform poorly because it will use more fuel than it needs to. The engine needs the oxygen sensor because the amount of oxygen that the engine can take in depends on a lot of factors--altitude, the temperature of the air and the engine, and the barometric pressure, to name a few. If a car doesn't have an oxygen sensor, your car's computer will end up making assumptions on how much fuel is needed, and might put in more than the required amount of fuel. This ends up in excess unburned fuel and can lead to pollution.
What are symptoms of a rich and a lean mixture?
Straying away from the perfect air-to-fuel ratio, which is 14.7:1, can lead to either a rich or a lean mixture. Taking in less air than this perfect ratio will produce excess unused fuel--this is called a rich mixture. The unused fuel creates pollution. If there is more air than this perfect ratio, a lean mixture and excess oxygen are created. A lean mixture creates more nitrogen-oxide chemicals, which will cause pollution as well. If the Toyota Camry is producing more exhaust gas than normal, is performing poorly, or has noticeable engine damage, it might be producing either a rich or a lean mixture.
In case the oxygen sensor needs to be replaced, where can it be found in a Toyota Camry?
The location and number of oxygen sensors in a Toyota Camry depends on the car year and model. Regardless of the year and model, though, the oxygen sensors are located along the exhaust system assembly. One sensor is usually mounted on the front of the exhaust pipe and another one on the rear. If there are more than two sensors, the third one is most likely located on the back pipe near the catalytic converter.
