Usual Signs of a Hyundai Elantra Oil Drain Plug Going Bad

Located just below your oil pan, your oil drain plug is a passageway that allows the release of motor oil every time you do your oil change. The small plug is tightly installed on the pan to make sure no oil leak develops on your car. However, your oil drain plug goes bad over time. When this happens, you need to fix or replace the part immediately before motor oil loss is damages your engine. With this, mind the following signs of a Hyundai Elantra oil drain plug that is taking its toll:

Spilling oil

If you see motor oil on the ground, your oil drain plug may have developed a leak. This happens when the plug is loose and is not positioned well in its location. When you experience this problem, immediately check the plug. It might seem tight, but its threads can strip and allow oil to seep through the gaps. That being said, take out the plug and check the threads for damage. If it is a case of stripped threads, you need to replace the plug with a larger one. This would "renew" the stripped threads on the oil pan.

Broken oil drain plug

A frustrating common scenario with your oil drain plug is when it breaks and half of the plug is left inside the oil pan. This happens due to application of excessive torque to the plug during installation. Like most bolts, your oil drain plug needs to be installed with the correct amount of torque to ensure it does not receive or cause stress once installed. When this happens, replace your broken plug and carefully install the new one.

Rounded Hyundai Elantra oil drain plug

When your oil drain plug is rounded, it is an ultimate sign that the part has already experienced enough of the socket wrench. The plug, due to constant oil changes and removals, develop a rounded head. If the head of the pug is too rounded to the point that the socket wrench does not work on it anymore, you need to replace the plug. Remove the old one with a bolt extractor and purchase a new one.

Motor oil change is very important to your car. The oil drain plug is a crucial part that assists in this process. This part is located below your oil pan and allows easy draining of old motor oil from the pan. To work well, the oil drain plug should always be fitted tightly. Over time, problems arise with the plug. To avoid such problems, you should take good care of the oil drain plug. Here is how:

Apply the right amount of torque when installing the Hyundai Elantra oil drain plug.

The drain plug is more like a bolt that is secured on your oil pan, and like most bolts, the plug needs to be installed with the proper amount of force. Otherwise, damage might develop on the plug or your oil pan. A common symptom of an oil drain plug that is "overtorqued" is breaking in two where the other half can get stuck inside the oil pan. This can be a difficult problem because the broken plug part stuck in the pan can contaminate the oil and cause corrosions. To avoid such problem, you need to take special consideration of the amount of torque you apply when installing the oil drain plug.

Replace the oil drain plug washer every motor oil change.

Washers and seals may be tiny parts of your car. However, they play crucial roles in sealing small openings that can develop leaks. Such is the purpose of the oil drain plug washer that is placed between the Hyundai Elantra oil drain plug and your oil pan. It helps in sealing the opening of the oil pan to prevent oil from leaking into the ground. As most seals, the oil drain plug washer should only be used once. When you remove the oil drain plug washer or during motor oil change, it is advisable to have the washer replaced. This ensures that your oil pan will have a brand new leak protection together with its new motor oil.

Clean the oil drain plug from time to time.

The oil drain plug is located below the oil pan which is located at the bottom of your vehicle. This makes the drain plug very prone to different road debris and elements. Because of this, regular cleaning of the oil drain plug is required. Wiping the whole plug with a clean rag would do.
