You do not actually get any warning signal when your engine’s temperature escalates too fast, and that is why some drivers like you just find themselves on the roadside facing a car with smoke billowing out of the hood. Since this is always the case, you just have to ensure that you can prevent temperature rise in the engine by installing a heat exchanger. Known as the radiator, this component has winding tubes that allow heated coolant to pass through, and every cycle, the heat in the coolant is dissipated through the radiator fins and to the surrounding air. That is basically how it works. The moment you notice a leak around the radiator’s critical areas, which would likely lead to a sudden rise in engine temperature, then the mentioned part is definitely up for replacement. Nissens is one brand that you may try, but before buying its product, let us first see if it has the qualities you need.

We tested this component on a 1998 Toyota Tacoma and a 2000 Nissan Altima, and here is what we have to say:
Thumbs up
- The unit had a good, natural finish. The aluminum material was of high quality, the core was well-made, the plastic tank was thick enough, and the extra transmission cooler was in good condition. Overall, the unit passed our visual inspection.
- We ran the two vehicles for two hours each in order to see how well the product performed. There was nothing bad with the temperatures of the engines, and we thought that the levels were just normal for the two cars. When we stopped to park, we inspected the areas around the hoses to check for leaks. There was none, but we were quite worried about the hoses not having metal sleeves that could prevent leaks better.
Thumbs down
- For some reason, the left side of the radiator designed for the Altima was quite unbalanced with its other side. When we installed the unit on the car, we had a hard time mounting it in place. As a workaround, we just had to cut a half-inch of the plastic on its left side in order to make it fit.
- There was an issue with the mounting hardware of this product. The screws on each side of the radiator were very stiff; they did not allow the unit to move in sync with engine vibrations. This would cause leaks and cracks in the component in no time. Rubber washers would have made up for this deficiency.
The verdict
This radiator comes with a competitive price and an acceptable warranty, so we think that it is already a good bet. The product we got had problems with the construction and appearance, but we thought that these were just coincidental. Still, the manufacturer could have made its quality check more stringent.
