Series : HDX Drop Step BPS SeriesNerf bars for the Ford F-350 Super Duty are designed to withstand the rigors of the road, but they still do need periodic maintenance to protect against them wear and damage. In this guide, we've listed down some key maintenance tips for the Ford F-350 Super Duty nerf bars.
Cleaning the nerf bars not only keeps it looking fresh but also prevents the onset of rust and decay of the nerf bar's metal and plastic components. General cleaning with your preferred car shampoo and warm water should effectively remove mud, dirt, and most stains, although we recommend using a soft-bristled brush to remove debris from the mounting points and other hard-to-reach areas of the bar. Rinse well and wipe dry with a clean rag.
After every wash, we also recommend adding a layer of metal polish on chrome nerf bars. Aside from giving the bars a mirror-like finish, the metal polish also helps repel dirt and moisture. However, not all metal polish products will work with chrome bars, so make sure to check the instructions first before applying it on the nerf bar surface.
Corrosion is a common problem in nerf bars, especially for vehicles that are frequently driven in humid, off-road conditions, and removing these depends on the type of bar you have and the severity of the damage. For chromed nerf bars, for example, minor rust spots can be cleaned up by scrubbing the affected area with cola and aluminum foil. Non-chromed or painted bars, on the other hand, will require sanding, application of body filler, and repainting. However, if the damage is extensive that the integrity of the bar has been compromised, it is best to have it replaced with a new one instead.
Ideally, the mounting bolts for the nerf bar should be tightened to 65ft. lb unless otherwise stated by the instruction manual. Tightening the bolts beyond that might damage both the threads of the bolt and the mounting holes. On the other hand, tightening the bolts less than the recommended torque will gradually become loose. In addition, it is also recommended to tighten the bolts by hand with a torque wrench, as using an impact wrench tends to over-tighten the bolt.
Nerf bars for the Ford F-350 Super Duty are designed to be as problem-free as possible. In many cases, the only times you will interact with it is the time you actually install it on your vehicle and when cleaning it. But as reliable as they can be, nerf bars can also become a source of problems, especially if they were not installed properly.
Problems with the Ford F-350 Super Duty nerf bars vary in severity, but they can all be diagnosed and fixed with the right tools. In this guide, we'll share some troubleshooting tips you can use to fix problematic nerf bars.
The brackets aren't lining up
The brackets not lining up properly — resulting in an uneven and unsafe platform — is usually caused by one of more of the brackets being mounted on the wrong spot on the truck or that the bars are on the wrong sides. Using the nerf bar's instruction manual as your guide, check whether the bars and the bolts are in their correct positions.
Bolts may also not line up properly if there is an obstruction in the bolt hole, such as a plastic grommet or rust deposits. Check for and remove any obstructions from the bolt holes and retighten the bolts. For cases of rust, you may need to clean it with a wire brush.
Misaligned step bars
Step bars can also become misaligned, which is often caused by the bars being on the wrong side of the vehicle. Swapping the bars often fixes this, although you should also check the mounting brackets whether they are on the correct positions as well.
Noises
Clanking or rattling noises from the nerf bar means that it is hitting against a metal part of your vehicle. Loose bolts are often the culprit, although this can also be caused by bolts that have worn threads. Check the connections and adjust the brackets accordingly so that they clear all metal around the bracket. We also recommend applying white lithium grease between all metal-to-metal connections. If white lithium is not available, regular grease is fine to use. However, the bolt threads are damaged or are worn out, have them replaced with new ones.
