Maintenance Pointers for Ford F-250 Super Duty Nerf Bars
The nerf bars for the Ford F-250 Super Duty are exposed to mud, dirt, and debris on the road which, along with the fact that they are constantly being stepped on, can shorten their service life. Thankfully, nerf bars are quite easy to clean and maintain, especially if done on a regular basis.
Here are some common ways to maintain Ford F-250 Super Duty nerf bars:
- Cleaning the nerf bars on a regular basis is the best way to ensure they remain pretty and prevent corrosion.
Common mild soap and water are often enough to get stainless, chromed, or powder-coated nerf bars clean, although car shampoo products that have polishing properties can give the nerf bar a much improved sheen.
- Wax on, wax off.
For chrome or stainless steel nerf bars, we also recommend applying wax after every wash as this not only restores the shine of the bar but also protects it from the elements. Make sure not to apply wax on the step pads, however, as it may reduce their traction and cause anyone stepping on them to slip.
- Go manual, instead of automatic.
Although most nerf bars nowadays are capable of withstanding automatic car washes, it is still recommended to have them washed by hand. This is because car wash brushes are unable to reach the corners and underside of the nerf bar, and it is often these spots that tend to accumulate dirt and mud.
- Are there rust spots on your chromed nerf bar? Try brushing it with aluminum foil.
Aluminum reacts with rust chemically, resulting in a material which can easily be wiped off. And because aluminum is softer than most metals, it is not likely to leave a scratch on the chrome finish or the metal underneath it. Dip the aluminum foil in water and rub it on the affected area. If the corrosion is on a pitted surface such as in the mounting holes, wadding the aluminum into a larger piece will make it reach those areas.
- If the corrosion is severe, the nerf bar may require sanding and repainting.
Scrubbing steel wool or wire brush often removes the most stubborn of rust, especially if the affected area is pre-treated with rust dissolver and baking soda. Make sure to wear protective gloves and eyewear when handling chemicals.
A sagging, rusty, or otherwise ailing Ford F-250 nerf bar can be quite an inconvenience, but these problems are often easy to diagnose and fix. And if you have the basic car repair tools and the time, anyone with the rudimentary skills and knowledge in automobiles will be able to troubleshoot and fix these nerf bar problems in the convenience of their own garage.

The bars are thumping or rattling
Rattling noises while driving are arguably the most frequent complaints of truck owners regarding nerf bars. Check the connections and brackets to see if they are tightened properly and adjust them if necessary. You can also apply grease or, better yet, white lithium on any metal-to-metal connections to reduce further noise and friction.
Brackets not lining up with the holes in the step bars
If the brackets are not lining up properly, it may mean either one or more of the brackets are mounted in the wrong spot on the truck or the bars are mounted in reverse. Check the brackets first; if they are mounted properly, the nerf bars may be mounted on the wrong side.
Step pads do not line up correctly with the truck doors
In most cases, the pads do not line up properly because the bars are on the wrong side of the truck and have to be switched. You should check the mounting brackets as well; brackets that are mounted in an incorrect position may also cause the steps to line up wrong.
Brackets don’t have a snug fit
The brackets for nerf bars don’t tend to have a perfect fit and end up being loose or tighter than what most people expect. However, it may also be caused by the brackets being mounted on the wrong slot or hole. Look at the parts list and make sure the correct piece is mounted in place.
