- Prevent the buildup of carbon in your muffler. To remedy this, you should take your muffler apart at frequent intervals and clean the carbon buildup. The frequency of the cleaning requirement will vary with the oil you are using and how often you operate your engine. Determine your engine cleaning schedule and stick with it.
