With raised and lowered suspensions in the rage now, demand for shock absorber extensions has also increased. And today, shock extensions are just as commonly found in the market as aftermarket lifting or lowering kits. But not all shock extensions are created equal, and the key to getting a safe and satisfying performance from your pickup or SUV’s modified suspension is investing in a good quality shock absorber extensions. We tested one such aftermarket extension, the MaxTrac shock absorber extension, and checked if it could bear the brunt of our battery of tests.

The Pros:
- Does what it says. The extensions prevented the shock absorbers from overextending and maintained the proper angles.
- Easy to install. It took us approximately 15 minutes to prep and install the parts and hardware. With some basic know-how and the right set of tools, you can even install this aftermarket add-on right in your garage.
- Solid construction. All the components feel quite sturdy and functioned normally when driving through rough terrain.
The Cons:
- May have compatibility issues with Autoride shocks. We tried installing the extensions in a late model GM Yukon with a Z55 Autoride shocks, and they didn’t fit properly. We recommend checking your pickup or SUV if it has Autoride shocks first before getting these extensions.
- May not be 100% compatible with leveling kits from other brands. MaxTrac’s shock absorber extensions are designed with their leveling kits in mind, so while the extensions may work like a charm if you use a MaxTrac leveling kit, you may have a diminished performance if your vehicle has a kit from another brand.
The Bottom Line:
Despite their shortcomings, MaxTrac shock absorber extensions are good add-ons to your MaxTrac leveling kit. They keep standard shocks operating normally even when the suspension is lowered or raised and durable enough to withstand your typical wear and tear. It is highly, recommended, however, that the extensions be used alongside the MaxTrac leveling kits and suspension components to ensure an optimum performance from your pickup or SUV’s lowered or raised suspension.
