There’s a good bunch of lowering tactics and kits you can try to get the drop you want for your truck or SUV. Some of them are not that safe and effective; others are quite expensive, such as putting in new leaf springs to adjust the ride height. But you don’t have to spend a lot of money by getting all-new springs. You can just keep the old factory springs and instead use a rear axle flip kit. We tried this mod on our Chevy using the MaxTrac axle flip kit to get about a 5-inch drop. With the leaf springs sitting on top of the rear axle, we had to use the kit to be able to flip the axle and relocate it above the springs. Here’s what we have to say about the product.

The good
- Our truck was lowered about 5 inches to the ground without so much of an issue with performance and handling. We didn’t have to sacrifice ride quality to get the sporty look and low profile stance.
- The kit worked well with the stock leaf springs. It gave the vehicle a rather huge drop, but this didn’t interfere with other suspension components.
- We didn’t have to use a C-notch kit. The kit is designed to ensure a safe amount of travel between the frame and the axle, and that’s one of the things we like about how the product is engineered.
- Thanks to the easy-to-follow instructions, it didn’t take us too long to install the flip kit. We’re able to install the kit correctly since it’s a direct fit on our Chevy. We just had to make sure that the pinion angle was right to avoid any problem.
- We can’t say that the kit has any bad effect on our Chevy. It could carry some loads and do some towing, though this is best done with helper bags.
The not so good
- With this mod, it would be best to have complementing new shocks.
- We can’t say that this can compete head to head with the best selection or top brands in the market, although for its price, it does a pretty good job. It’s not exactly designed for maximum performance, but it’s not bad for a daily driver.
Our final thoughts
You can achieve the low profile look using the MaxTrac axle flip kit without getting into any trouble with handling, ride quality, and overall performance. You just have to set it right. It gave us the desired height we wanted for our Chevy, and for that, we give it a thumbs up. It’s not exactly the best. But then, if you’re looking for a decent axle flip kit within a mid price range, this be a good choice.
