To keep the Chevy running smoothly, your Chevrolet mass air flow sensor must be in good condition to monitor the air from the intake system. When this component becomes faulty, fix it immediately to avoid an unbalanced air-fuel mixture that may cause your vehicle to stall or to use too much fuel. Here are 7 easy-to-follow steps to guide you through the repair process:
Difficulty level: Easy
Things you'll need:
Step 1: Make sure the vehicle's engine is not running and has been cooled down. Open the hood and find your mass air flow sensor. Usually, it is positioned on or near the larger air cleaner box.
Step 2: Unclip the harness that is attached to the middle of the sensor. Your finger or a small screwdriver can easily remove this clip. Do it gently so you will not break the clip. Slip off the harness from the Chevrolet mass air flow sensor. Next, take out the screws that secure the air flow sensor to the intake system and carefully pull out either the sensor only or both the sensor and its housing. Be careful with the wires as they may break easily.
Step 3: After taking out the housing unit, use a vise grip or pliers to securely hold the air flow sensor and pinch the sides of the screw attaching it to the housing. Usually, you have to keep on turning and wiggling it until the screws are out.
Step 4: Then, once the sensor is out, use an appropriate electronic parts cleaner to spray the platinum sensor wires at the bottom of the mass air flow sensor neck, which is located in the intake system. The cleaner will remove any dust, debris, and other particles that have gotten in the sensor and its housing, causing it to become faulty. In addition, clean the surrounding areas while the sensor is out. Other foreign materials may have hidden on the sides and underneath the sensor. Clean everything thoroughly to ensure great working performance and long-lasting service life. You can also clean the Chevrolet mass air flow sensor by putting it in a clean plastic bag with rubbing alcohol. Carefully shift the bag around so that the alcohol removes all the dirt and grime.
Step 5: Let the mass air flow sensor dry completely in a clean place. This may take around thirty minutes to air-dry. Installing the air flow sensor while still wet can actually damage it.
Step 6: When thoroughly dry, put back the Chevrolet mass air flow sensor the reverse way you took it out.
Step 7: Return the mass air flow sensor to its housing near the air cleaner box. Make sure the screws are attached properly to secure it in position. Reattach the screws to the intake system and slide back the harness to the middle section of the sensor. Check the connection. Inspect all the screws and connectors.
