Chevrolet K20 Pickup Locking Hub Troubleshooting

Thanks to your quality Chevrolet K20 pickup locking hub, you're able to enjoy effective four-wheel drive performance through even the most demanding on/off-road conditions. For newer vehicles, this component helps drivers to automatically put their vehicles into 4WD. The locking hub is an essential part of any 4X4, and it should be kept in tiptop shape in order to guarantee smooth component and automobile performance. This auto part, however, won't last forever and is bound to wear over time. When this happens, you must diagnose the problem and solve it as soon as possible. This guarantees that your vehicle's 4WD ability will not be compromised.

Oil seepage

Locate the locking hubs, found at the center of the front wheels. Inspect the hubs for any evidence of oil seepage, which would be a telltale sign that your internal hub gasket damaged and in need of a replacement.

Rough turning

Manually turn your hubs back and forth, from the "locked" to "unlocked" position (not applicable for automatic locking hubs). The hubs should ideally turn freely, so if they grab or bind, then this calls for some internal cleaning.

Grinding noises

If you notice any grinding noises from the hubs, then find an assistant and do this simple test. Have your assistant slowly drive the vehicle while you listen for noises from the hubs. If the noise is prevalent, then that means that the locking hub has failed and that it's slipping in and out of position, creating the grinding noise.

Four-wheel drive failure

If you operate your vehicle with the hubs locked and with the 4WD engaged and yet the 4WD is not working, then the manual locking hubs have damage. When your hubs lock in, your front tires will turn without the help of your back tires. So if you have a busted hub or hubs, then one of both of your front wheel will not turn, even after you've engaged the 4WD.

Failure to disengage

Locking hubs may also fail to disengage, but this rarely happens. When it does though, the vehicle will behave as if it was in 4WD, but you'll notice some loud popping noises from the hub. If you encounter this problem, then back your ride up about six feet to help the hub disengage.

Often times, some drivers may take for granted that they can enjoy smooth four-wheel drive performance with their reliable pickup. And it's only when things go array do they wish that they had taken better care of their ride. So if you want to ensure smooth off-road, 4WD performance, then you better take good care of your Chevrolet K20 pickup locking hub. This component, which is located at the center of your wheels, guarantees that your four wheels are engaged when needed. If this component were to become damaged or worn out, then your 4WD may fail to engage or disengage. Luckily, there are many ways for you to keep your locking hubs in prime condition for as long as possible. So follow the maintenance tips below for extended 4WD performance.

Clean your hubs

It is very important that you clean your locking hubs at least once every two years or every 24,000 miles. You'll do this by first disassembling the locking hubs on the front wheels using a screwdriver. After removing the hubs, clean them using a household cleanser and scrubber. Afterwards, allow the cleanser to set before scrubbing it; this method effectively loosens debris.

Lubricate your hubs

Lubricating your locking hubs is another maintenance task that should be done alongside the cleaning of the hubs. You should do this during the same time or mileage interval as when you do the hub cleaning. So after you clean of the debris from your hubs, lubricate them with automatic transmission fluid. Spread the lubricant evenly using a towel, and then reassemble the hubs.

Observe for noises, other signs of damage

A vigilant mind and a keen ear can go a long way in maintaining your locking hubs. Try to observe for grinding noises from the hub that would indicate slipping. When this happens, have the hub checked for damage right away. In addition to that, a popping sound from the locking hub could indicate that it hasn't been disengaged properly. As a short-term solution, drive your vehicle in reverse for a good six feet to allow the hub to disengage.
