To enhance your truck's look, try setting up a lighting system on its roof. If money is your biggest dilemma, you don't have to worry because light kits are very affordable. Moreover, the installation procedure is very easy to pull off. Even a beginner DIYer can do it. You don't have to pay a mechanic or a technician to do this for you. So if you're ready, here are the steps on how to mount a light kit.
Prep the truck before the installation:
Step 1: You must remove all components that are attached to your truck's headline; this includes the visors and lights. The headliner must be taken out as well, if your truck has a built in sunroof. The headliner is fragile so be careful in dismantling it from the sunroof. The safest way to do it is by removing the four trim pieces, which you can access from the truck's interior. The headliner slides off from its mounting once the trims are out.
Step 2: On the roof, create a layout or a set-up plan that marks the exact spots on the roof where the lights will be installed. Use a tape measure to determine the dimensions. Label the corresponding spots with masking tape.
Step 3: Start making holes using a drill. Drill through the masking tape to avoid chipping the paint.
Step 4: Take the switch access panel used to control the headlight. You can find it at the side of the steering column. Take the steering cover by prying its edges using a flat tip screwdriver. Take headlights' wire connectors; this is a black cable with yellow stripes on it.
Installing the lights:
Step 1: Mount the light template on the roof. Align the roof holes with the holes on the template.
Step 2: Insert the bulb holders through the holes and tighten the bolts to secure them on the template.
Step 3: Attach the bulb sockets to the bulb holder, and then place the bulbs on the sockets.
Step 4: Place the lens covers on top of the light set up. Do not tighten the bulbs yet.
Step 5: Connect the lights' electrical wirings to the electrical system of the truck. Run the wires down to the glove box.
Step 6: Get the fuse lead in your light kit and install it in the fuse box.
Step 7: Take the headlight cables and the wires from the lighting set up on the roof. Splice the ends and connect them with a soldering gun. Cover the connections with electrical tape.
Step 8: Tighten all the bulbs on the sockets. Apply the gaskets around the lighting fixture to ensure proper sealing against water. Tighten lens cover screws.
Step 9: Reverse the procedure to put all the components back into the truck.
