Common Issues with the Ford F-150 License Plate Bracket
A license plate bracket is a good investment for your Ford F-150. With all the wild adventures that you're likely to undertake, it keeps your important license plate securely in place. Now, it is difficult to keep tabs on your bracket because it is such a small part with a quiet role to play. If it falls off, it could be some time before you even notice it. There are several signs that you can look out for to make sure that your Ford F-150 license plate bracket is in great shape:
Creaks up front
When your bracket comes loose due to a lost bolt or a bad crack, the first warning is audible. You will likely hear it slapping repeatedly as you drive along. Once you hear it--it is going to e very loud, it is best to pull over and deal with it. If the cause is a missing bolt, replace it. It is a pretty standard size for a bolt. If the damage was due to breakage, secure it temporarily with tape then use epoxy to glue it back in place. Depending on the severity of the damage, it might be a better idea to replace it.
Discoloration and surface damage
When exposed to heat of extremes in temperature, the surface of the bracket can get discolored. This is usually due to deterioration of the enamel coloring or the chrome. This usually is not too serious and does not lead go immediate breakdown. If left untended to, it could lead to breakage. Cleaning is the first step, and repainting brings back the old look. For chrome, brushing with steel wool has the same effect. After that, you should coat the surface with weatherproof wax.

If you have a plastic bracket, a good wash with water and soap is enough. Follow it up with a bit of weatherproof wax and it should be good for a long time. For chrome brackets, the same thorough wash should then be followed up with a good polishing with any ordinary chrome shine. Make sure you do this as often as you can.
Tighten the bolts.
With the constant vibration of the truck in everyday use, even the most secure bolts get loosened over time. If left unchecked, these can possibly fall off. A good check before every drive is really enough to secure it for a very long time. If you really want a tight fit, a small amount of epoxy on the bolts will keep it in place longer.
Inspect, and inspect often.
Lastly, you should check the condition of the bracket often. What you are looking for are the smallest cracks. Again, due to vibrations, these can grow quickly if left untreated. Once you notice cracks, deal with them right away. Epoxy putty is very effective when applied to cracks; it can keep it from growing too much. It is not a perfect solution, however. If the cracks and damage is too much, it is better to replace the bracket altogether.
